The job of a candidate is to convince the American public to vote for them, then to govern. Hillary didn't do that, and ignored the signs pointing to her defeat. Maybe it was her campaign manager's being incompetent. But she still holds the responsibility of being in charge of the whole operation, just like President's have responsibility for things that happen in their administration.

That's not really how democracy works, is it? I mean, yes, you are supposed to win, but you're supposed to win by being the better candidate. Which Clinton obviously was, and she communicated that she was.

Trump is the electorate's fault - enough of them allowed themselves to be conned for him to be elected.

A politician has to win the electorate they have, not some imaginary perfect and rational electorate that has tons of time, or even desire, to read policy proposal websites.

Remember Bill's and Obama's appeals about "she has a PLAN, A PLAN. Trump doesn't have one!"

voters were just like, uh he does it's MAGA

what I'm saying is that she ran a great campaign for people in a better alternate dimension

here in the darkest timeline, she should have better accounted for humans being idiots, but she chose a more optimistic view that failed utterly in the face of human incompetence

Hot take incoming but I need to get this out someplace because people around me are sick of hearing me talk about it. I think I've gone through all the stages of grief and come back around through them 5 times already.

Intellectually I understand the economic reasons that may have driven certain segments of the population to vote for Trump. Really, I do. While my area of the country was never really big in traditional manufacturing as far as I know we did lose one of our major employers back in the 80s and never really recovered to the same level as back then. But, I admit my privilege being super white in a fairly affluent area of NY. Also college educated with a graduate degree working in higher ed with a solidly upper middle class income, so I'm the liberal elite these people really hate.

I may never completely understand the plight of rural white voters but, I'm doing my best. I also understand that while I was a giant Hillary supporter, she didn't resonate with the people we needed to get her elected. She lost, which is too bad for her and too bad for the country but it is what it is.

However, emotionally I cannot come to terms with this just yet. This trend of Democrats self-owning and beating themselves up over losing, blaming everyone except the people who voted for Trump is loving ridiculous. "Oh, they have legitimate economic concerns." Fine, but when they are willing to overlook incredibly xenophobic sexist racist poo poo for the false promise of non-existent super-jobs getting handed to them, why are we trying to rationalize it?

As a zillion posters have said before, the jobs these people want are not coming back. They do not exist. Well-paying factory jobs for lower-skilled people are a gigantic myth in all but a few industries that are vanishingly small. It is a simple truth that has to somehow be made clear or all we are going to do is flipflop between whichever candidate (of either party) can lie about that poo poo better and tell people what they want to hear. It is not fair to economically disadvantaged people to spew a line of bullshit - at some point the hard truth needs to come the gently caress out. Rip off the loving bandaid. And then we need to figure out what to do next. Helping this segment of the population is an extremely difficult question. As a huge FDR fan, I see the appeal of New Deal 2.0, but I sincerely don't know if WPA-style jobs are going to make people happy. It's a tremendously difficult issue that can't be solved by bullshit sound bites, but here we are with the king of bullshit sound bites because nobody wants to face the truth that economics are hard, job market shifts suck rear end, and the capitalist system that Donald Trump just loving epitomizes is always going to cause problems like this.

And again, as other posters have said, we should not favor economic justice over social justice. I'm not talking about stupid internet bullshit either. I strongly believe we can have both if we are willing to put in the work. But we should not give a pass to people willing to overlook the rhetoric that was spewed in this election to chase a false economic promise. We've come so far with social issues, and have so much further to go with it, and if we just give people a pass because "They don't know any better, they've never met a black/muslim/brown/gay/etc person" or "Economic problems are more important to them" we are going to lose all that progress.

I don't want to say "gently caress everyone who voted for Trump" but guess what? It's really hard to get over that when I see my community college students, many of whom are significantly underprivileged minorities, immigrants, and marginalized people who are struggling to make ends meet just as much as any rural white person (some of them are rural white people!), show up every day to better themselves into the skilled jobs that DO exist. I have difficulty not saying "gently caress Trump voters" when I see adult students who were laid off, downsized, or lost their jobs in whatever way here at night retraining for something new even well into their 50s. Are any of them happy about it? Probably not, it sucks to be poor or unemployed. But they are here and they are trying, and most of them will succeed. We track that poo poo, you know. And 90% of our graduates come right back to our local communities and give back.

And yet, liberal folks like me are "condescending" to Trump voters when we say "please realize you need this degree/certificate/job training to get that job you really want and really deserve, we are doing our absolute best to make sure it is extremely cheap and will not put you into mountains of debt, we are and have always been here for people like you who want to provide a good life for your families. I'm really sorry that the world has moved on from what your dad or grandpa did but there is a place for you if you're willing."

And yet, our enrollment is going down like crazy despite there being documented evidence of jobs in certain sectors of the market that GASP we train for and provide extremely affordable degrees and certificates for! I can't help but roll my eyes when we say "Hey look jobs! Come here and you can get them!" and people go "NO gently caress COLLEGE WHO NEEDS IT LIBERAL BRAINWASHING RARRRRR"

I'm sorry. People need to face reality and not buy whatever snake oil people are selling in search of the winning lottery ticket or magic super job. Guess what? liberal elites like me are unlikely to suffer under Trump's administration, at least economically. I feel pretty personally safe as a white liberal woman in a liberal stronghold state, although the social justice part is worrying. Guess who is going to get super-hosed by this administration? Trump voters, because nobody wants to give or listen to hard truths, and nobody (not even Democrats) wants to tackle this incredibly thorny issue.

And before this is just internet bitching, I plan to volunteer through my Union to help people in my area, plus I signed the Ellison petition and am planning on crashing my local Democratic committee and spewing socialism everywhere. I want to help. I just can't forgive and forget just yet.
