It's not an axis, it's a triple or rather quadruple entente of facism, with Putin, Le Pen, May and Trump. Calling it axis nowadays is insulting to the former axis states that have actually learned from the past (well, western Germany has, not sure about Austria/Italy).

You guys are forgetting Orban and Duda. And I'm sure Greece will follow suit after the thorough humiliation every non-fascist politician has suffered there so far. Italy is not unlikely to turn either. Nationalism is not fascism though, having strongmen (or -women) at the helm doesn't mean they're going to cooperate with each other toward any grand goal. They probably won't even be able to agree on whether EU is good or bad.

Accidents happen. It was pretty stupid to use Mig-29K if Su-33 (or whatever they have in ground bases) can bomb the poo poo out of civillians a lot better. Training exercise? Rivalry between navy and army?

There's no reason tactically or strategically for them to be using the Admiral Kuznetsov if they have available airbases. It's all for show and they can't even pull that right.

Rivalry between navy and army? Aircraft carriers do CAP in addition to bombing, and the article says it was a "training flight", though who knows. Either way if the Russians where purely concerned about tactical expediency, I suspect they'd have left the Kuz in port and based more bombers at Latakia or something. Like the long range Bear and Blackjack bombing missions, this is an exercise in geopolitical theater (and to an extent a live fire test).

Huh, so our state-owned public television channel LTV has this show where they conduct low-key investigations on a wide range of topics. Say, how hard is it to make IEDs in Latvia, how to publish a book in Latvia, what on Earth is a Norwegian domestic offender doing in rural Latvia, and such. The latest one was them looking into the Order of the Three Stars award process. Apparently, that caused Constitution protection bureau and Security police to launch an investigation on journalists, including interception of their phone calls, location tracking, and such.

In 2009 a controlling interest in Bashneft was acquired for $2 billion by Vladimir P. No influential Russian politician is "proper hosed", this guy is one of the heads of the liberal wing of the oligarchy. The worst that could happen is he gets disgracefully removed from post and gets to enjoy leisure time as a mega-rich Russian. Siberia and prison is for peasants, def not the neo-aristocracy.

Chechen mugger is for people that criticize Putin. He'll most likely get to enjoy his wealth minus some fee. Depending on his cooperation he might get to pick England, Austria or Switzerland as his destination of choice. Worst case he gets Cyprus.

I wouldn't really go as far as saying that prison is off the charts. Russia's once richest oligarch, Khodorkovsky, did actually get to spend 8 years in prison. He didn't get out before Putin dealt with his empire, and rearranged political and financial domestic landscapes, despite significant international pressure regarding the case.
