Based on how badly Nintendo botched the classic, what are the chances that the Switch will be a similar gently caress up.

The supply will be limited, but this one will guaranteed actually be possible to preorder, probably starting Jan 12, so if you want one you'll be able to get one.

Nintendo? gently caress up a major hardware release? It's not like they have a history of this or anything.

N64 GameCube and WiiU, GBA, DS, and 3DS were easy to get at launch. The only difficult one was monster smash Wii. If the Switch has the Wii's launch problems Nintendo will be happy.

nintendo loves stupid proprietary ports; the switch uses USB-C. nintendo love stupid, gimmicky names; "switch" is the most boring, on-the-nose name possible. nintendo loves marketing $300 electronics to children, to the detriment of every other demographic; the switch trailer looked it was cast with how i met your mother extras. at what point is it going to be obvious enough that they aren't repeating every mistake they've ever made on a product that is arguably the most important in their history?

I don't know what you mean about the shop. It's perfectly usable, and has like every title available on launch day. I think the WiiU was the first console to start doing that.

Pre-orders will go up on the 12th so any gently caress-ups will be entirely on Nintendo/production to actually have enough to fill the launch orders that are made. If they're expecting 2 million in march worldwide because that's literally all they can make in time there will be problems, but I doubt it'll be that extreme unless they really want to time bursts of availability with change in currency exchange.

Kimishima has said the 2 million is them being conservative and they have the ability to increase the shipment if demand called for it.

A smaller stock can make people rabidly attracted to a product if it's cool. The Wii was hard to find and I didn't get mine until 6 months later, but it felt like forever.

Not super proud of it but my wife and I snuck in through the employee entrance at a mall on Wii launch day. When they finally let in the horde who had been waiting at the legit entrances we were already standing in front of GameStop trying to look innocent. After we got our Wii, a security guard had to escort us to our car. But they did that with everybody who got one anyway. I think this not being a Christmas launch basically guarantees we won't have a repeat of that level of madness.

I got a Wii by skipping class and waiting a couple hours. The Switch launching next year could either be a good thing because it gives them more time to make more switches than if they had launched this year or it's a bad thing because they don't think they will have enough so they are launching at a time when people aren't clamoring for christmas gifts.

While I don't think there's going to be any hordes waiting outside of shopping malls (or indeed anything near the level of the PS4 and Xbone launches), Nintendo of America has a dreadful track record in shipping plentiful supplies of anything that's not a Mario game in the last few years. Considering how woefully supplied American retailers are of the NES Classic, an machine that costs Nintendo approximately tuppence to make, I dread to think how limited an actual console will be in America. This is definitely a console I'd advise pre-ordering if you're in the United States and don't want to wait until May.

I started working at a GameStop-type shop right before the PS2 launch, which was a drat right mess. We had to do similar things with security and so on. We were at a tiny mall in gently caress-all nowhere and we had an armed policeman nearby for the early-morning opening. Everyone who was there at 6 AM or whatever was cordial and professional, I am happy to say.

Don't forget that someone once literally died due to....what was it? Bladder failure? Because they were trying to win a Wii in a radio contest for their kids by holding in their piss for hours? That happened didn't it?

It actually wasn't the bladder, she just od'd on water, which is apparently possible.

Yeah, there have been several cases of water poisoning due to water drinking contests. Drowning is a completely different thing, in case you were wondering.

The worst part is a doctor called in to the radio show to tell them what they were doing was dangerous and they brushed it off and said "Can ya believe this kook? Water bad for you? LOL!"
