well ok:

here we have 'racism' as trivia of as much relevance as twitter kids and celeb gossip. this isn't what he meant, as he explained above, but it's a natural reading which both i and tatum took

however here's a guy from early in the thread being explicit that race isn't important and we shouldn't talk about it:

my sincere judgement and that of several others is that well-meaning left-wing people can have a bad habit of slipping into minimising race due to an excessive focus on a deracialised idea of the 'working class,' and this would be bad both in itself and as a political strategy, so we're going to warn against it if it feels like it's popping up again

I mean there's these. "Stop talking about race" is a really loving poor solution that will only screw over minorities to appeal to people who probably won't switch sides anyway. I'm sorry I'm not combing the thread for pages of examples when I'm talking about a more general trend that exists beyond SA?

These facts don't have to be oppositions, we can say that we have failed the working class without pretending this is some kinda weird noble savage thing where the poor backwards babies just don't know what a goddamn starbucks is and they got tricked by the mean orange man. Working class people are hurting, they need a hand extended to them, but also a lot of them place the blame on minorities and poo poo, and those people need to be told 'maybe shut the gently caress up'.

Hey maybe instead of telling them to 'shut the gently caress up' you explain why it's isn't actually the mexicans or the blacks and you run a platform that helps everybody instead of acting like that is some kind of impossible thing. It's not the 30's anymore, we don't have to explicitly exclude minorities for social stimulus.

Trump got fewer votes than Romney. Clinton lost because despite the other guy being a racist con man she still failed to present a case to the electorate outside of the Northeast and big cities on the West Coast that was sufficient for enough of them to vote for her rather than stay home of vote for Johnson/Stein. So focusing on the racists is pointless because they're never going to vote for a Democrat. Focusing on the people who feel abandoned by the economy and government can gain votes.

Talk about it sure, but talk about in a way that isn't like 'get good you racist rear end in a top hat', but rather, 'Hey your wrong about Mexican migrants and here's why, and also here is why you've been told that it was there fault'

Anyone saying racism determined the outcome of the election is ignorant of the complete picture or being intentionally misleading because they don't want to talk the other issues. And ooooooh boy, the DNC really likes doing the second one right now.

the thing is, outside this thread i encounter quite a few poc commentators reporting on and despairing at people jumping on the 'white working class appeal' bandwagon at the concrete expense of anti-racism. i think this thread is pretty good, but sometimes i get that sort of feeling, and there's no guarantee it won't slip over time as people tunnel-vision on the thing we want to actively change, which is class politics. or maybe they're all overreacting, but 'ignore what i see members of group x being concerned about' doesn't seem like a good start in not ignoring the concerns of group x

this is a fair question. i don't know if there there was a strategic mistake re racism, but the potential mistake going forward would be to not concentrate efforts on fighting the barrel-load of racism likely to come down the pipe from the trump admin and gop congress, leading to minority disengagement (base disillusioned from their concerns being ignored you might say) and also minorities just plain not voting because gop governments won't let them

I guess? I still think you're overemphasizing and injecting this notion that everything you don't like is racist into everything, but whatever.

Economic populism and economic justice for every American is numero uno, alongside an equally robust racial justice platform.

Very different from the way a certain centrist wing of the Democratic Party has been doing.

As for this, Blame Clinton for the latter, but the former will be in the new DNC platform once Ellison and people like him remove the reigns from people who have no intention of addressing wealth inequality, and worse, use racism as an excuse for never doing it.

Getting hung up on the racism of individual voters is missing the point, though. Racism convo should be about the system that fucks everyone over and the literal nazis that Trump admin has empowered.

Republican racist messaging has damaged a lot of Dem anti-poverty measures though.
