Hey maybe instead of telling them to 'shut the gently caress up' you explain why it's isn't actually the mexicans or the blacks and you run a platform that helps everybody instead of acting like that is some kind of impossible thing. It's not the 30's anymore, we don't have to explicitly exclude minorities for social stimulus.

The idea that somehow a trump dude saying a racist thing and saying racism was a factor in a poo poo load of trump voters are both equally wrong to do, that's what I'm talking about I guess. Trump got fewer votes than Romney. Clinton lost because despite the other guy being a racist con man she still failed to present a case to the electorate outside of the Northeast and big cities on the West Coast that was sufficient for enough of them to vote for her rather than stay home of vote for Johnson/Stein. So focusing on the racists is pointless because they're never going to vote for a Democrat. Focusing on the people who feel abandoned by the economy and government can gain votes.

The point is that chalking up this loss to racists and racists alone is dumb as poo poo and misses the point. Anyone saying racism determined the outcome of the election is ignorant of the complete picture or being intentionally misleading because they don't want to talk the other issues. And ooooooh boy, the DNC really likes doing the second one right now.

the thing is, outside this thread i encounter quite a few poc commentators reporting on and despairing at people jumping on the 'white working class appeal' bandwagon at the concrete expense of anti-racism. i think this thread is pretty good, but sometimes i get that sort of feeling, and there's no guarantee it won't slip over time as people tunnel-vision on the thing we want to actively change, which is class politics. or maybe they're all overreacting, but 'ignore what i see members of group x being concerned about' doesn't seem like a good start in not ignoring the concerns of group xmrmcd posted:I'm pretty sure every single human being on the planet was aware Trump is a racist piece of poo poo by election day. So please tell me what you think the strategic mistake was re: racism that isn't just despairing at the human condition. this is a fair question. i don't know if there there was a strategic mistake re racism, but the potential mistake going forward would be to not concentrate efforts on fighting the barrel-load of racism likely to come down the pipe from the trump admin and gop congress, leading to minority disengagement (base disillusioned from their concerns being ignored you might say) and also minorities just plain not voting because gop governments won't let them

I still think you're overemphasizing and injecting this notion that everything you don't like is racist into everything, but whatever. Economic populism and economic justice for every American is numero uno, alongside an equally robust racial justice platform. Very different from the way a certain centrist wing of the Democratic Party has been doing.

Getting hung up on the racism of individual voters is missing the point, though. Racism convo should be about the system that fucks everyone over and the literal nazis that Trump admin has empowered. Republican racist messaging has damaged a lot of Dem anti-poverty measures though.
