I don't know what is in Kaepernick's mind, but tons of black Americans have become disillusioned from the voting process due to the fact that institutionally racist policies are supported by both major political parties in America. Of course there are ballot referendums like the death penalty and parolee ones in CA, those are a good place to make a difference (compared to hoping that Clinton actually does something to reform our police system), and it's a shame Kaepernick didn't vote for those but whatever, he still does a lot of good stuff.

I think the more "publicly aware" (bleh) would have been to ignore the question or just say "I don't believe in either candidate strongly enough to endorse them".

Prozach posted:I don't even know what he wants anymore. The poo poo he's asking to happen is flatout impossible without voting. Fisk implied that Kap is following some of Malcolm X's advice in his "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech. Which is, I think, "A ballot is like a bullet. You don't throw your ballots until you see a target, and if that target is not within your reach, keep your ballot in your pocket." (which could be interpreted as "if the candidate you want isn't available, don't vote") But that's a speech that needs to very much be put in context, and especially that section of the speech, as he was partially putting pressure on Johnson to get the Civil Rights Act passed in the face of Dixiecrat obstruction. "f the black man in these Southern states had his full voting rights, the key Dixiecrats in Washington, D. C., which means the key Democrats in Washington, D.C., would lose their seats. The Democratic Party itself would lose its power. It would cease to be powerful as a party. When you see the amount of power that would be lost by the Democratic Party if it were to lose the Dixiecrat wing, or branch, or element, you can see where it's against the interests of the Democrats to give voting rights to Negroes in states where the Democrats have been in complete power and authority ever since the Civil War ... That's why, in 1964, it's time now for you and me to become more politically mature and realize what the ballot is for; what we're supposed to get when we cast a ballot; and that if we don't cast a ballot, it's going to end up in a situation where we're going to have to cast a bullet. It's either a ballot or a bullet. ... Lyndon B. Johnson is the head of the Democratic Party. If he's for civil rights, let him go into the Senate next week and declare himself. Let him go in there right now and declare himself. Let him go in there and denounce the Southern branch of his party. Let him go in there right now and take a moral stand -- right now, not later. Tell him, don't wait until election time. If he waits too long, brothers and sisters, he will be responsible for letting a condition develop in this country which will create a climate that will bring seeds up out of the ground with vegetation on the end of them looking like something these people never dreamed of. In 1964, it's the ballot or the bullet." It's a hugely important speech, and everyone should read or listen to it. To answer you directly, I think Kap is still finding his particular answers, it's just unfortunate that he's doing it on a very public stage. If Kaep had some kind of coherent plan for leverage it would be one thing. And it's weird, because it became clear that he had put a lot of thought into his protest and minimized the ammo he gave to his critics.

I understand how Kap feels because I felt pretty disenfranchised and I'm not even a minority. But there's still downticket races, even in California, and propositions, and simple fact is, vote is speech. Passing up speech is passing up a chance to protest, and I figure if you're going to kneel, you need to kneel with your vote to and make it as loud as possible, even if it's a vote of no confidence in both systems. So, I understand his cynicism, but disagree heartily without demonizing him as an idiot or anything like that. He's reckoning with his identity. We all are. It's not something that ends with, "Trump bad, racism bad," that's for drat sure.

Trump winning was pretty unexpected so I guess I can buy the claim that he didn't think worst case scenario was going to happen, but that kinda shows why you need to engage with the process in the first place. It's more understandable than Kap's position I guess is what I'm saying.
