Sen. Boxer spoke about killing the electoral college. A more reasonable goal is to complain about apportionment since people are familiar with that.

Killing the electoral college will basically never happen, but there's voters in red and blue states who are horrifically underserved by it compared to small-state neighbors. That's the way we'll get things changed, if they ever get changed at all.

Since it benefits the Republicans they will never go along with eliminating it, but there is a compact some states have signed on to that would kick in once they reach 270 EVs to give them all to the popular vote winner.

I don't think anyone is smug about poo poo anymore, now that the rush of proving clintonistas wrong has run its course through the sanderistas, which was pretty justified considering how bad it got leading up to election day in here. Now the reality is setting in that Donald loving Trump will be the president of the United States and now we have to accept and deal with this reality.

Elections aren't won on technocratic talk about many issues. They're won on the people's answer to, "Are you better off now?" or "Do you feel better off now?" or "Are you comfortable on their record that they are going to make you better off or do you feel comfortable that I will do it?" For the vast majority, "better off" is increased wealth, or in a broad way, economic security. A lot of people are better off. But wealth concentrations were not sufficiently spread out, or shared, to make the voters that changed the election feel included in the changed way wealth is being distributed. You can maintain all the discourse about other forms of inequality, and will be damned if you don't. But unless it is wound into a larger message of shared economic security and how it diminishes other inequalities, demagogues will roam the streets and the halls of the Congress.
