Evil Fluffy posted:The GOP will just make sure Pence and others are sufficiently sweet-talking Trump when they need bills signed while the Secret Service ends up babysitting him for the next several years. Also Black Lives Matter or some other movement will be painted as the source of problems that Trump's having/causing, so that the racist base go after them instead of the GOP. The "sweet talk Trump into playing ball" strategy has already fallen apart and it's only been a week.

Reminder : Chris Christie prosecuted Kushner's father and sent him to jail. It's a real problem if Kushner get's top secret clearance and if anyone would be indicted it would be him so he can follow his father to jail.

Also, doesn't the President get really in depth reports on the Financial Markets and has access to information that normal investors would not have?

Cup Runneth Over posted:Obama's administration basically just took Bush's and discontinued most of the heinous poo poo, and flipped from socially conservative to socially liberal. They lubed up the federal dick and that was enough for most people to stop complaining. Don't exaggerate. Bush would never in a million years have issued the Clean Power Plan, his Justice Department wouldn't bother trying to investigate or get consent decrees on police departments that extrajudicially murder black people, and his Labor Department wouldn't ever issue the kind of rulings on overtime and safety requirements that Obama's has. And neither will Trump's. There's "Obama wasn't as groundbreaking as I would like" and then there's "Obama is just Bush but black and with the serial numbers filed off!!!!" and one of them is a stupid loving thing to say.

Or can like the Democrats do the same thing the Republicans have with just investigate the hell out of the administration? It's committees that have the power to do those kinds of things, either standing committees (like the Senate Armed Forces committee) or select ones (BENGHAZI, though that was a House committee), which are created for a specific single purpose. Committees always are chaired by a member of the majority party, and always have more votes from the majority party, which is why they get used to bury legislation the majority party never wants to reach the floor.

Whatever political maxims and common sense you've been relying on to navigate the world up to now need to be fully reexamined from first principles, and thrown out if found wanting. We have a population that adores soldiers even as they go off to fight wars that nobody wants them to fight in. I can absolutely see the public getting behind forcing kids to join the military, on the basis of it building character or whatever other poo poo.

Yes, but each chamber delegates those powers to its committees, because a Committee of the Whole doing an investigation would be . Even impeachment hearings are mostly done by the Judiciary Committee. The Senate does the trial as a Committee of the Whole though.
