Lindsay Graham hates Donald Trump so yeah it's likely at least a few Senators who are in "safe" districts could go against the grain in some cases.

I think the count is close enough that the Dems could not only filibuster but actually not pass some legislation.

I just had a great idea for fighting the Texas bathroom bill. We need enough protestors to occupy every bathroom stall every hour of the day when the Lege is in session, so that they will have to run across the street to Starbucks to be able to poop. If we can run some extension cords in there all the protestors can watch Netflix or something

The working theory is that the R's want to keep the filibuster around to let the Democrats keep the truly ridiculous stuff Trump tries to shove through Congress from going into law. Of course that depends on the Dems not going "Well he's your guy and you're all in with him so you must really want it! Let's have a vote!"

Have you considered the possibility that they don't expect any democratic majority to ever be possible again in a no-filibuster world? Because then, after all, they can just actually implement explicit paper bag tests in polling booths nationwide and rule any speech to the left of Mussolini illegal, both decisions the Supreme Court then upholds 5-4 because they got to ram through Scalia's cryogenically preserved head

The political climate is way more polarized now. The Dems would have way more public and political support to obstruct poo poo now. Especially since Trumps approval rating is already like 35% and will only go down further. And only like 25% of people say he has a 'mandate'

Sure that would be ideal, but given current political finance rules you could have a candidate and their allies carpet-bomb 4-5 states (CA, NY, FL, TX, IL) with ads and win that way while paying the other 45 states nothing more than marginal attention.

Those states aren't monolithic though. It's also no different than now, just focusing on the more populous states where, you know, most people actually live. People who aren't the dominant political identity of their state would feel like they matter and we wouldn't have anymore of this "I lost but still win because EC hurr durr" garbage.

I also frankly would rather have a system that benefits the left more than the right, given the choice. Leftists might ignore the rural. Right wingers absolutely will.

You're probably a lot more likely to see reformed campaign finance laws long before the electoral college gets removed.

A switch to 100% public financing with a set per-state budget (and hell, maybe even a "you must spend at least one day in each state" rule?) could go a long way toward fixing that issue.
