A Wizard of Goatse posted:I think this assumes they can bring Trump to heel to get a coherent policy package through, which they haven't actually succeeded at thus far - kissing the ring at the last moment on pain of being publicly humiliated doesn't make them the ones calling the shots. Unless GOP legislators can make a credible threat of impeaching or assassinating him or something to force Presidential compliance Trump has very little motivation to play ball with the Republican party at all, and has shown a strong inclination to arbitrarily start foiling whatever they try out of sheer spite even where he didn't already pretty much lean blue-dog. I'm not ruling out the possibility some new order will have been established with Trump not at the top by the inauguration but from the looks things right now he'll veto bills because Mike Fitzpatrick's name is on them and he said something Trump didn't like in 2004. I can see it going one of three ways 1: Trump actually is able to keep the RNC on a leash the way he did leading up to and past the convention. He is policy chaos personified, jerking any which way the favored adviser whispers in his ear before he is fired and replaced. 2: Trump can't keep a hold of the reins of power within the party, gets impeached for something pretty drat egregious (anything shy of high treason won't stick), and Pence gets to fulfill their wet dreams. 3: Trump is just a useful idiot and the RNC keeps him on a leash. Mostly the same result as 2, except less efficient and tripping over its own balls.

I'm gonna start working on a letter to my Democratic Senator pointing out how collaboration is only going to help the Republicans hoping that they already know this and are just trying to act like the adults in the room before they let the Republicans get to bickering among each other when they realize they have to scuttle some of their own bills. I know that's not going to be the case but I can dream.

It wouldn't be too terribly hard to dig up some leverage on Trump and it's not like he's committed to anything bigger than himself, but he is decisively the one everyone's bowing to right now, and projecting some 11-dimensional chess power-behind-the-throne master conspiracy onto the rabble of infighting Tea Partiers and Bush nostalgics who've inherited the wreckage of the GOP seems... implausible. We watched the Republicans see the grab them by the pussy tape, walk back all of the condemnation, and accept Trump. I'm sure they all personally hate him with the fury of 1000 suns, but they also see every single fever dream they've ever had materializing before them. There's no ethics or patriotism that will pull anyone other than Lindsey Graham and Paul Ryan back from that abyss, not when they can privatize social security, end Roe V Wade, and go balls deep on trickle down. They stonewalled a supreme court justice, prevented a sensible and popular president from doing anything since 2010, and elected Trump with no backlash that they care about. So yeah, we're going to get a fully staffed cabinet on a delayed timeline packed full of absolute maniacs, but the Republicans will stand by it all. The GOP has more loyalty to their party than to their president.

Id also argue that it isn't as usual because the left is actually waking up from the big lie of "vote for the lesser of two evils and enjoy your scraps" I dunno I think "the left" has realized this for a long time, the problem is that "the left" is really small in America and most people are more than happy to compromise with a neoliberal financial industry candidate if he says the right things during the election. Just look at the outpouring of "support" Hillary had from so-called progressives. She's about as bad as a candidate can get and the general liberal consensus was that if you don't vote for Hillary you're a racist/sexist. Honestly it's pretty much the same way now.
