There was a local antifa group in my town that was talking about protesting the local Democratic meeting. I told them that if they asked nicely they could probably get on the agenda. Heck, if they put half the effort into showing up, we'd have an antifa committee at the state level.

BrianBoyko [S] 0 points 6 days ago I've lost battles before. I've dusted myself off, picked myself up, and got back into the fight. This is different. We lost the war. But whatever, even if you think that "someone has to stay and fix this mess," I'm not in any emotional shape to fight anymore. The morale is gone. Maybe, if I spend enough time abroad, I'll have healed enough to join the #hindsightis2020 movement to get Bernie elected again. But I can't heal here in the U.S.

My brother the socialist won't stop posting "I told you so" things on Facebook and it got me wondering, have "Hillbots" ever been a real thing and not just a strawman? Does it refer to people who were actually all-in for Hillary on day one or also people who conditionally accepted her, like me? edit: as I thought most people do of every politician, including Trump supporters. Does it refer to people who were actually all-in for Hillary on day one or also people who conditionally accepted her, like me? When people told me they hated Hillary Clinton or (far worse) that they were "not fans," I wish I had said in no uncertain terms: "I love Hillary Clinton. I am in awe of her. I am set free by her. She will be the finest world leader our galaxy has ever seen." Hillary Clinton's name belongs on ships, and airports, and tattoos. She deserves straight-up hagiographies and a sold-out Broadway show called RODHAM. Yes, this cultural canonization is going to come after the chronic, constant, nonstop "On the other hand" sexist hedging around her legacy. But such is the courage of Hillary Clinton and her supporters; we reverse patriarchal orders. Maybe she is more than a president. Maybe she is an idea, a world-historical heroine, light itself. The presidency is too small for her. She belongs to a much more elite class of Americans, the more-than-presidents. Neil Armstrong, Martin Luther King Jr., Alexander loving Hamilton. Hillary Clinton did everything right in this campaign, and she won more votes than her opponent did. She won. She cannot be faulted, criticized, or analyzed for even one more second. Instead, she will be decorated as an epochal heroine far too extraordinary to be contained by the mere White House. Let that revolting president-elect be Millard Fillmore or Herbert Hoover or whatever. Hillary is Athena.

For self-deprecation to work, there has to be some kind of critique, but there's no criticism when you're fully embracing being garbage.

Mark Blyth spoke at the Watson Institute about a week ago with his own autopsy report on the result of the Trump election, and the impending right wing takeovers in several European states. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWMmBG3Z4DI It's 1 and a half hours long, so if you don't have the time the core summary is highlighted here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K8bf6dbYt4 If you don't know who Mark Blyth is, he's a Scottish professor of political economy who went viral when he did an interview for Syriza, and outlined the causes for Trump's rise half a year ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwK0jeJ8wxg

loquacius posted:Lena Dunham is herself a microcosm of everything wrong with the American coastal "left" Yeah, the key point being that they're not on the left at all. They're typically from a well off class of people who can still afford to live in urban zones despite the massive property values, and are completely insulated from any real working class hardships. Dunham herself is the daughter of two successful artists who have careers spanning decades, and they gave her at least $65,000 to produce Tiny Furniture, which she cut most of the labor costs for by convincing her friends & family to act and produce it. The only reason they're not Republicans is because of the aesthetic stigma of being anti-LGBTQ, or racist. They interpret the world as a spectacle, so of course they'd be enamored by the spectacular celebrity-fueled campaign of Hillary Rodham Clinton. Trump's campaign for sure was no less spectacular, but it was a hard & ugly gutteral spectacle - like a professional wrestling event. Something none of them could ever relate to.

There's a whole bunch of Hillary supporters now going back and saying "the only reason she lost was because Bernie Sanders ran against her in the primary and corrupted her campaign with too much socialism. How can you say "Sanders tapped into the same anti-establishment anger that Trump did" which ended up winning him the presidency, and then in the same breath say that if Clinton had been more establishment she would have won? She didn't lose because she "kowtowed to minorities" she lost because she failed to offer a platform of change, and instead promised more of the same, which turned off people on both sides of the fence. That and a myriad of other mistakes that, if addressed, could've maybe still won despite her uninspiring message.
