I totally get why the fanservice might make some folks uncomfortable, but since the entire show is a long look into the mind of a very confused and horny teenager (with another very confused and horny teenager guest-starring - hi there, Episode 5), its presence does at least make rather more sense than in other works. Like, yeah, this episode was about Cocona deciding how she felt about Papika, and realising that she feels quite a lot of different things about her. That means crossed wires ahoy.

Like, yeah, you may not be cool with young girls getting sexualised, and that's fine, but for this particular show, the story of a teenage girl's sexual awakening (where she realises she's into girls) told through primarily visual storytelling, it's sort of baked into the premise, so you really have to lump it or leave it. This is the story they chose to tell.

I guess it's fanservice but it's also clearly supposed to be cocona working her way through her feelings for papika using romantic stereotypes because that's how young people form preconceptions about love

Keeping your fingernails trimmed is lesbian shorthand for 'there might be some sex going on soon', for hopefully obvious reasons.

E: I mean it might be a bit more subtle than that and be just to remind us of green hair senpai and by extension the danger of unkwoningly changing something they shouldn't now that we know it's possible. I can't remember exactly where the nail clippers popped up, so. I've a feeling it was during the love hotel bit though in which case, yeah...

It was a joke because nail clippers are a totally mundane thing to find in someone's desk, yet Cocona was scared about what she'd find poking around.

So, like I know I'm gonna get owned for saying this, but is it gonna actually come out and say it by the end of the series? I know they seem to be building up to it from what I've heard from you guys, but after being burned by stretch, I just want to know for sure they are gonna say something that just goes and says it, before I actually watch the series. I'm sure this sounds ridiculous to you guys, I understand that but the idea of watching this series and having to then withstand it just being ambiguous in some manner just will not leave.

perhaps they are just trying to be fancy here, I just don't trust anime. I pretty much have come to expect betrayal.

i feel like that's common sense for any sexual encounter, really. is this actually a Specific Lesbian Thing? (i ask in the anime forum)

I mean yeah it's a stereotypically lesbian thing, in straight sexual encounters men are much less likely to have fingernails worth worrying about and woman are less likely to be sticking them in anywhere, though obviously that's not universal.

I'm actually a little confused and not sure how/where people got on board with the show being explicitly Yuri as early as they do; is it from the Director being upfront or is there something I missed in episodes 1-3? I don't doubt its there but it seems like it was super obvious to everyone and it wasn't to me.

I mean people saw stuff in the first episode (Cocona's reaction to Papika moving her face towards her in episode 1 being a prime example) and tweeted the director about it and he literally stated 'yeah that's what we meant'. Also the writer (or senario director or something like that) is well known in yuri circles and even does a yuri column in Newtype magazine.

thechosenone

Yeah I've sort of suspected that, and that's why I've been holding off. I have my doubts about anything regarding lesbians until they just come out and say it. because until then, no matter how obvious it may seem to some, until they commit to it, they will always have that air of, 'gonna leave ourselves a way to back out', and it just leaves me unable to enjoy subtlety in these sorts of things.

Edit: hrm, well, I see. I don't think I can be blamed for having trepidation though. Would be lovely to have shows with homosexual romance that can exist somewhere between 'tease until the very last moment, and chicken out' and 'beat you over the head to death with it, until you get kind of sick of it'.

It's partly the director being up front about it - someone asked him on twitter if the Yuri vibes were intentional and he said yeah. But, I mean, episode 1 has two separate scenes where it looks like Papika is leaning in to kiss Cocona, only to reveal that she was only sniffing her hair plus a climax where Cocona saves Papika's life before they tenderly embrace while falling out of the sky, then episode 2 is just...kind of horny in general and has a climax that features Papika declaring that she'll never let go of Cocona, then episode 3 has still more sexually charged imagery, Cocona delicately cradling Papika when she was afraid that she'd hurt her, and Papika literally going "I love love love love you~!" The show's been framing P&C in pretty romantic terms more or less from the word go.

Someone involved with the show was asked if the yuri subtext was intentional around the time episodes 1-3 aired and said yes. That doesn't necessarily mean that the show itself will make it explicit, of course, but it does make it hard to say "They're just good friends, really!"

if you're really, really wondering about whether people are reading too much into it or not and the director's very tweet about it doesn't convince you, here's an old interview with the writer of the first six eps to give you an idea of what runs through her mind when writing these kinds of shows

https://yaranakya.wordpress.com/2015/06/30/on-yuri-2-changing-definitions/

interview with ayana yuniko, writer of the first six episodes of flip flaps posted:

Ayana: Yes. There were parts of it that made my yuri spirit burn, after all (laugh). Now that the work is all over, I can say this openly, but when I was working on Locodol, writing some parts of it helped me release the frustration pent-up from Kiniro Mosaic. Writing Kiniro Mosaic, I could only use the purest parts of myself lest I defile the beauty of the work, and it wasn’t easy. So when the time came to work on Locodol, only the dirty me was left. For that reason, the yuri intensity degree of the work became relatively high. Nevertheless, my intention when writing the script was to include enough humor to make the yuri ambiguous. But the execution of the finished product was going in the real deal direction. I saw it and thought, “Can’t make excuses for that…” (laughs).

I: By the way, what was the idea behind making the final episode of Kiniro Mosaic into a musical?

Ayana: When we decided that the final episode would include the characters producing their own work, the director told me “Well then, let’s make that part into a musical.” I myself was surprised at the content, but I thought it would be a waste not to do something we normally couldn’t in the main story episodes. Because the characters are acting out a musical and not themselves, it was fine for Aya and Youko to become a mermaid princess and a prince in a romantic relationship.

From the New World technically fits. Not necessarily a very sensitive portrayal of homosexuality (I say this as someone who likes the show), but it's completely unambiguous about the main characters being bisexual without it being the main plotline.

I mean, if you're looking for P&C (or P&Y, if the show does the lovely predictable thing and has Papika be Cocona's Persona and disappear at the end) to kiss I'm not sure it's going to happen just because of how this show eschews traditional narrative structure and relies on subtext in general. But, uh, I think the point at which Cocona literally considers banging an imagined, idealized version of Papika is the point at which the show has made its intentions explicit enough for any halfway reasonable viewer.

Perhaps you might have a point, but if there isn't an explicitly romantic gesture (like it doesn't even have to be a kiss), I'mma be so unhappy.

Something makes me feel like this is sarcastic. If I am correct, then I am sorry that you had to go through that.

Because seriously, when they do that... it is just terrible.

I kind of want a manga where an author tries to do that and then is delivered an rear end whopping by his own characters.
