Curious Euro question: is this the usual goon talk of "the sky is falling", or is the US really hosed that bad now ?

The main source of panic is the Republicans controlling the House, Senate and Presidency. This makes it easier for them to pass terrible legislation as well as control over Supreme court appointments. It's not that different from the UK having a solid Tory majority, which underscores how much more divided and distributed political power typically is in America. The British/Canadian/Australian Prime Minister is relatively far more powerful than the American president and can do far more damage in the hands of reactionary conservatives. Think about that Brexitailures.

The other source of concern is Trump is an idiot who is about to choose the worst people for his cabinet and executive branch positions. Once again, it's not like the UK's Boris Johnson is much better. American foreign policy is probably going to be a mess for a while.

Finally, Trump getting elected more or less puts any federal action on climate change on hold for 4-8 years. So the sky isn't falling, but it's going to be marginally warmer due to Trump's election.

I never had any reason to doubt that his presidency would be made of empty threats, but settling on Trump University made that even more clear. I still don't know how it will play out when he promises to fight some other foreign leader forever then then capitulates to them quietly a few weeks later.

Sorry, but I wasn't talking about being an "ally" of the sorts of people who have already made quite sure I'm aware that I'm a bad Jew who shits all over God's commandments by doing things like "using the internet on Shabbat", "eating non-Kosher food" and "listening to female singers". Thanks for bringing all that up to just poo poo on my Jewishness, because, y'know, ex-observant Jews just don't get enough of that already. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, given that this isn't the first time you've told people in this thread what Jews think or commented on how many Jews there are in this thread, and that you're now casually minimizing the potential impact of anti-Semitism. You can take your "wokeness" and shove it.

The media has never, ever had the balls to call out actual racism because they know that their viewers are profoundly indifferent to the suffering of someone darker than balsa wood while being hypersensitive to the grave crime of daring to not say something nice about white people in general. They also love to act all worried when minorities make any kind of noise for that sweet, sweet white worry money. Nothing short of Trump dropping all pretense and walking around in a KKK hood would be enough to make them reconsider since he's been their biggest draw for over a year.

I think Muslims and Hispanics are most at risk from a Donald Trump presidency. Hasn't the logic behind Trump having a Jewish (favorite) daughter/grand kids been that it makes him less likely to do anti Semitic stuff? I mean his son in law is one of his closest advisers and Israel seems to be taking him winning pretty well all things considered.

The House is probably lost to the Democrats past 2020 anyway, especially as the 2020 election will use the existing gerrymandered districts. Trump didn't really change anything on this issue, which emphasizes just how thoroughly the Democrats were defeated in 2010. It will be interesting to see the dynamics of the house under a Trump presidency. Disappointingly they've already displayed a degree of unity with Ryan's re-election as speaker, denying us another bitterly protracted nomination battle.

The loss of SCOTUS picks is undeniably another major defeat for the Democrats, just a complete loss.

If there's one (small) silver lining, it's that the US Senate is one of the least democratic institutions in the wester world and Republican Senators don't really have to go along with Trump's more dangerous schemes unless they want to. There's probably enough Trump-hating "moderate" Republicans in the Senate combined with the Democrats to put the brakes on the more obvious moves towards a totalitarian or fascist state, which is one of the underlying concerns with Trump's election.

Not necessarily. There's plenty of racists who will make exceptions for the minorities they're personally friends with while still being racist about the overall minority group as a whole. A guy who goes on about welfare queens and criminal tendencies doesn't get a pass on racism just because he has black friends, and the same principle applies here.

As for Israel, they're fine with Trump because the Israeli media hasn't really covered his anti-Semitic ties, and because there's not really that much he can do to hurt Israel without also helping Muslims or running afoul of Congress.

Personally, I don't think Trump himself will push any directly anti-Jewish legislation or policies. But he'll almost certainly foster a culture of apathy toward anti-Semitism, while he and his closest aides publicly make anti-Semitic statements that inspire anti-Semites to action.
