There's overlap in regards to broad concepts like "gay people are okay" in contrast to socially conservative political ideologies but the differences have had a huge spotlight put on them in response to the liberal wing of the left having the republican party poo poo directly into their mouth this year. It's good and even important to distance yourself from liberalism as a brand because it is inextricable from the Tina Fey Sheryl Sandberg Tom's Shoes brand of leftism which isn't really leftism at all to be frank. Even if just from a pragmatic standpoint, liberalism is dead so calling yourself something different is a good idea.
