How much is 15k calories worth of hay in kgs?

According to a horse website I just googled it's heavily dependent on the feed (table is calories per pound)

code:
Green Pasture 245
Orchard Grass Hay 872
Alfalfa Hay 977
Timothy Hay 804
Alfalfa Pellets 970
Corn 1,536
Premium Oats 1,250
Beet Pulp 1,059
Farr Maintain 1,800
Compete 1,500
Youth 1,400
Equine Shine (Rice Bran)	1,600
So if your hypothetical cav army was relying purely on forage they would need to find a fuckload of grass, while if they had their poo poo enough together to bring some oats or corn along it would be a more manageable ~10 pounds of feed per horse per day.

Even more manageable if you're eating the grain in the winter stores of that village you just looted plundered converted to the one true faith.

and this is why even infantrymen spend much of their free time haying

although when they're payed at all, cav will be either payed enough so they can theoretically buy oats or be issued oats

An ACW union recommended ration for a cavalry horse was 14lbs of hay and 12lbs of grain. This could obviously be cut by pasturing, but that is going to be extremely situational.

I was surprised that green pasture apparently has several times the calories that lettuce has and then it occurred to me that that's probably because the horse, being a ruminant, can process all that cellulose. That's pretty interesting!

No, the codes were never taken from him. At his lowest point the Secretary of Defense quietly told the Pentagon to double check with him if a nuclear strike were ordered, but that was strictly informal and no one was under any obligation to do what he said. If Nixon had ordered a launch it would have been up to the officers receiving the orders to decide whether to go behind his back or not.

The rest of it is probably a conversation for another thread.

Not that I know of. You might be thinking of an incident during the Yom Kippur War when there was a potential crisis that Kissinger handled because Nixon was drunk. Here's a brief writeup about it: http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2015/06/richard-nixon-watergate-drunk-yom-kippur-war-119021

Going back to the wargame thing if you think about how much time people spend on computer games vs. history education it would probably be a really good idea to lobby for higher standards in games. All those instances of Chinese / Soviets being the Zerg faction. Or the "barbarian" trope. Or anything with vast tracts of terra nullius. It's a positive feedback loop for stereotypes, and a lot of them seem harmful.

I feel like Company of Heroes 2 made an effort to make the Soviets an interesting combined arms army even with the spammiest sub faction. The T-34's were pretty much as good as the Panzer 4 and everything was about carefully using mines, AT guns, specialized infantry, and aircraft together with the tanks to win.

Honestly I felt like it was accurate in that you mostly spammed AT guns.

Before you start going after games you need to go after a lot lower level cultural steriotypes. They're a reflection of the cultural assumptions that their creators have rather than the driving force behind them.

That said, if any game designers want to hire a historian to help you make your games not suck in this regard, I'm available and cheap.

It was probably inevitable for Hitler for Nazi reasons, namely all the peoples east of Germany were inherently inferior and murdering the lot of them would give the German people a wider place in the sun. When you think Communism is some sort of secret Jewish corruption, and this corruption is super successful in the land of the lesser peoples, you don't fear a war with them.

I'm not sure you can make the case that it was inevitable on Stalin's part - he was at least as evil and crazy as Hitler, but his foreign policy is forever cast in WW2/the start of the cold war, and that makes it difficult to call.

They can only go where the train line goes, but the train line mostly goes to major industrial and population hubs. Which is probably where you want to go as well. And in the era before the tank and anti tank gun, who the gently caress is going to stop a giant rail mounted battleship bristling with armour and guns?

I really wish someone would make a game about armoured trains, there's a few but none of them really go for "here build a loving beastly murdertrain with old warship parts and go nuts with it".

If you can see the top side of a plane, you are most likely looking downward at it, so it would be beneficial to try and make it blend in with the ground. Usually the undersides of those same planes would be painted some shade of white, grey, or blue because they would only need to blend in with the sky if you're looking upwards at them. Whether it was actually useful is debatable and the USAAF eventually just said gently caress it and didn't even give planes full paint jobs later in the war, but that's generally the line of thinking going into plane camo.

The USAAF said fuckit because the Luftwaffe didn't pose a threat, and the bare metal finish was a few mph faster than the painted aircraft.
