Lana?
Er, yes?
I want you on the next evacuation shuttle. Get off Ziost. Now.
What?
Sith intelligence is in disarray and the Republic is not going to stop with Ziost.
Title or no, you are now too important to the Empire to throw away casually.
And what does that make you?
I just crushed his strongest pawn. The Emperor will not act again until I am off Ziost.
How can you be sure? Hold on a moment--Yes. Alright, I’ll tell him.

Cute but fanged
So, at last we reach the shocking conclusion to Ziost. Gotta admit the first time I saw the planet die was a disturbing moment, though it does beg the question of WHY the Emperor was screwing around up till then, unless maybe he needed all those kills to build up the power to do that (which admittedly fits with stuff from the Jedi Knight story, he needed mass casualties on various worlds to build up to full "eat the galaxy" mode, lesser carnage fueling "kill a single planet" makes some sense). Unfortunately KOTFE kinda squandered the potential here, but still, can't say this didn't work as a "Oh crap, now what do we do?!" ending at the time for me.

It definitely was a bit of a shock when I first saw it too, after all you do to help Ziost. It feels kind of abrupt though and I was expecting more to do on Ziost post-cataclysm, and while there are a few daily quests and a Raid, it's pretty much over.

Vitiate wiped the planet clean, why would there be anything left to do? Does explain why Ziost is a deserted, forgotten tomb world in any Star Wars setting past the Old Republic era, though!

It's quite the ending, and I can respect the desire to build up the threat the Emperor poses. Still a little tough to tell whether their intent was to show Vitiate was toying with you the whole time and could've killed everyone or whether he was building power with the slaughter and had only just reached planet-purging strength. Also a little odd to have Lana acknowledge that the Emperor's been trying to take her over the whole time, they didn't really elaborate enough on how the Emperor was actually controlling people and how those that weren't controlled were resisting. There wasn't really much resolution to the Republic invasion either - some of them went crazy, but did the rest just... go home, once they saw the planet die? That have any impact on the Supreme Chancellor or her plans? Anyone want to check back in with Satele? No?

Also, small note here but I find the name "Vitiate" a bit ho-hum. I can see why they moved away from "The Emperor" considering he's trying to destroy his old Empire and the people currently running it aren't as keen on letting him do it as some of their predecessors, but it's not that cool a name and makes him sound like any of the other Sith Lords out there with delusions of grandeur.

Don't trust the skull.
I kind of like that, actually - it fits with the Empire's style that prior to this, he was always just The Emperor, spoken of with awe and reverence, but after Yavin, we have Always Been At War with him and now everyone refers to him as just, you know, that guy Vitiate.

(Presumably the Sith Inquisitor and Talos had an exciting adventure off-screen searching ruins to find out what the hell the Emperor called himself before he assumed absolute power so the Empire would have something to put on the new propaganda posters...)

You spotted the thing that bugs me.

Where'd that Republic fleet go? Darth Marr didn't send a fleet to evict it, so it should've still been here. It's a good thing they didn't capture the Space Parking Garage that Mort left the Fury on or anything.

Trooper Update 46 – Throwing Down the Gauntlet

Gear prepped, report filed... nothing left to do but wait 'till we reach Coruscant. Guess I could always check in on the squad.

You've been very supportive. That hasn't always been the case with Republic personnel I've dealt with since defecting.
Tell me about it. Don't worry, I'm not about to hold your past agaisnt you.
It's greatly appreciated, sir.
People distrust me as soon as I speak. They only hear my accent.
Even when I'm not a potential spy, I'm a resource. Endless questions about Imperial culture, personnel, military procedures... it's exhausting.
You're a good soldier, Dorne. Don't worry about what other people expect.
Thank you, sir. I really don't complain by nature.
Mistrust and inconvenience are a small price to pay for a clear conscience. I don't regret defecting to the Republic at all.
Despite my past, I was allowed to join the military, earn commendations and serve in the Republic's most elite squad. I'm very fortunate.
Maybe we can swap stories some time, if you're up for it. I don't usually like talking about my reasons for switching sides, but if it'll help...

My programming, my weaponry, my armor – all state-of-the-art. And my power core – a true marvel!
Other droids may look like me, or have some of my capabilities, but none of them have my power core. I'm very proud to be so unique.
So uh, just thinking out loud here, but you didn't read any of the logs of the imposter Havoc squad Garza was running around, did you?
No sir. Why do you ask?
Uh, no reason. quick, inspirational aphorism The differences among us are what give the Republic its strength.
Exactly, sir! Billions of unique individuals, coming together to contribute to the greater good. It's truly inspiring.
I see Havoc in much the same way. We are set apart from other infantry teams by one thing: you.
Thanks to your wise and courageous leadership, Havoc Squad is the finest military unit in the Republic. You are what makes Havoc special.
That's the good stuff. But seriously, I'm just another soldier. Nothing more.
The soldiers of the Republic are all very impressive, but surely none of them can compare with you!
Okay, you've got a point there. I am amazing.

It fills Yuun with pride to walk this path of honor at your side, and share your search for the victory upon which so much depends.
Havoc Squad was lucky to get you, Yuun.
Yuun was brought to this joining by necessity, not probability.
Among the Gand, recognition is drawn from achievements like this. Recognition requires specificity, and hence, the addition of names.
This honor is very great – perhaps great enough, in time, for Yuun to earn a second name among the Gand.
Havoc is the place to be for tough challenges and big wins. And if it's names you want, hell, that's easy – how about Bug-Eyes?
That is not... exactly the sense in which a Gand name is applied-
How about Metal-Face? The Findmaster? The Gand Grappler?
Yuun will get back to you. Great achievements may lie ahead, or they may not. Yuun's only true concern is to follow the path laid out before him.

Growing up on Nar Shaddaa, you only join the army for the free ticket out of there.
You enlisted so you could leave Nar Shaddaa?
You better believe it.
Before the army, I ran with whatever gang had the loosest boss and the most spare detonite.
Had a long list of enemies. Even street trash take it bad when you blow up their buddies.
Joining the army is an interesting escape plan. What, they don't sell tickets on shuttles anymore?
Can't argue with results. Worked like a charm, I'm alive and most of those scumbags aren't.
Joining up turned out to be the best idea I ever had. Lot more fun than running with those scrubs back on the streets. Most of the time.
Let me take a wild guess what your least favorite part of the job is.
Lot of rules, can't just beat down the people who come to enforce them. Have to play nice – or smart.
So which one've you been doing with me, Vik? Nice, or smart?
With such an easygoing CO, who says I have to play?
Ah. Dumb.

Thought we'd have enough to last us the year. Already requisitioning command for more. Should be waiting for us on Coruscant, so we won't be short for the big operation.
The munitions I get, but ration packs never last as long as they're supposed to. What, you guys not eating?
It wasn't a pretty picture when those heavy metals from Quesh worked their way out of Vik. Kind of killed the squad's appetite.
Blech, forget I asked.
Guess I shouldn't be too surprised. See more action in one day with Havoc than you seen in a month with the Deadeyes.
There's a lot of demand for a unit of our caliber.
We mainly ran decapitation strikes-
Caliber, get it? Because I've got this huge blaster?
I got it, sir. Neutralized enemy commanders before a Republic offensive. Left the opposition leaderless, disorganized.

Booooring. I prefer being on the front lines, where the action is.
The sniper's life isn't for everyone. All about that one shot that'll make or break a battle.
Eventually, I was offered a promotion and a post on Ord Mantell. I took it.
Smart move, career-wise. More men, more responsibility. But I wasn't interested in fighting separatists.
What were you interested in?
I signed on to fight Imperials. Anything else I did was career dressing.
After my transfer, command of the Deadeyes fell to my XO, Torve. Smart kid – a little green, but the potential was there.
You weren't sure I was fit to lead, and look how that turned out.
Point taken, sir.

Coming up on Coruscant now, sir. Orbital control wants to check in before we land.
And thank the Force for that, I think I'm full up on small-talk for the year. Look alive, people! Time to make nice in front of the General.

I understand you've succeded in bringing Havoc Squad up to full strength, Captain. Congratulations.
Havoc Squad can take down whatever the Empire throws at us, Commander, sir.
That's what we were hoping for. General Garza? Care to begin?
Certainly. As you know, Captain, the Gauntlet superweapon allows the Empire to target and destroy any ship traveling through hyperspace.
This capability, if put to use, would give the Empire an insurmountable advantage. It also makes an attack on the Gauntlet itself extremely difficult.

Can you explain this approach pattern, sir?
We've run the numbers from the Imperials' readouts and determined the Gauntlet's minimum time to acquire and lock onto a target.
Your ship, and those of my battle group, will approach the Gauntlet by making numerous short hyperjumps, always remaining below the minimum lock-on time.
Short, repeated hyperjumps are very inefficient – once we're in, our warships won't have enough fuel to return. Total victory will be our only option.
Failure has never been an option, sir.
Quite right.
But just so we're clear, once we win, we can refuel and get out alive?
Yes, the top military planners in the Republic did in fact think of that.
Just checking.

Once you're aboard, begin the demolition operation. Sergeant Yuun will help you bypass the security seals on the weapon's inner core.
Specialist Vik will then go into the core with you and plant explosives at key weak points, ensuring the Gauntlet's total destruction.
First I work with Yuun, then with Vik. Got it.
During your demolition operations, two Havoc Squad members of your choice will assault the Gauntlet's bridge and download all data from the weapon's computers.
Unassigned squad members will provide mobile backup to the rest of the team as needed. As soon as your objectives are complete, evacuate the Gauntlet immediately. Understood?
I'll assign the bridge assault team before the attack begins. At least I get to do something. Micro-managers.
We cannot overemphasize the importance of this mission, Captain. The future security of the Galactic Republic hinges on the destruction of this single weapon.
You and your team are no strangers to situations like this. You've faced incredible odds before and overcome them with skill and determination.

...Nothing? Seriously guys?
Next time, try reading the room first.
We'll do better at the victory party, sir.
Oh, forget it. Move out!

SEVERAL SHORT AND UNCOMFORTABLE JUMPS THROUGH HYPERSPACE LATER

Pretty sure the drat Gauntlet just fired at something, but since we're still alive I guess the operation is a go.

Lieutenant Coria reports that the Safecrackers have breached the planetary shield generator – you are clear to make your run on the Gauntlet. Good luck.
Give the Imperials a run for their money, sir.

Like Garza said, we'll need two for the assault on the bridge. Getting in there will be a fight.
Vik and Yuun are spoken for, so that leaves me, Dorne and Forex to hit the bridge. Who do you want on the job?
I want to send as much firepower at the bridge as possible. Forex will back you up. Besides, who needs a field medic when you can just stand behind a huge war droid?
Works for me. We'll clear the place out, huh, Forex?
Affirmative, Lieutenant, sir! No Imperial will remain standing in the wak of our heroic assault!
We'll make the final adjustments before we land. Any other words for the team?

This op will be flawless – no surprises, no screwups, no “improvisations” without orders. Do I make myself clear?

Uh... pardon me sir, but is that-
Oh for the love of – Jorgan! I told you to ditch the backup M1 on Coruscant! What is it doing in the briefing room?
Must've activated its homing beacon by mistake before we took off. I'll apply a selective memory wipe before we reach the Gauntlet.
No, this doesn't... but, my power-core is... the Republic, I-I-I-I-I-
Better make that two memory-wipes.

(Yep, when you disembark from your ship, you do a “landing animation” into empty space. Not pictured: whatever planet Coria is allegedly leading the Safecrackers on, or whatever planetary shield generator they're supposed to be taking out. The Trooper storyline, only the best!)

Sir! Standard Imperial boarding-party response team, straight ahead!
Thanks Dorne, I know a welcoming party when I see one.
That's a lot of muscle, sir. Have you got a plan?
Sure, I've got a plan.

Fire at will!

Oh, for the love of – who let that guy wreck our M1 unit?
Hey, don't look at me. Someone moved my vibrosword, I've been getting my with just my fists!
Just shut up and kill him! Or punch him! Whatever!

Sir! Yessir!
Good job Dorne. Okay, everyone else still alive?

We're down the droid, but we don't have to change the plan. I can take the bridge with Dorne.
I need her in reserve for medevac in case we hit any more snags. Get back on the ship and get the backup M1. And uh, maybe move the dead one out of the way before you bring it through here. Yuun, you're with me.
Yuun is ready to discover the path.

Vik, there's a whole room of dead bodies back there, find yourself a new blaster or sword or whatever and don't die until you can meet me with the bombs further in.
You're the boss. I'll unload the munitions while I'm at it, stash them somewhere the Imps won't trip over.
The signs point the way. The path to our first terminal is a short one.

The signs within this terminal's workings are clear to Yuun, Captain. Several others yet remain – all must be disabled for access to the core section.
We need to get this done quickly – can't you find another way to bypass the security seals?
Yuun's whole job is to find a way past these security seals. Do you really think Yuun has a second, secret, better way to do that which Yuun will only share if Yuun is pressed? When has pushing back against having to do something tedious which was obviously only included for the sake of padding ever succeeded in making a mission shorter?
Geeze, fine, you could just say no.

You go do your... seal... thing, I'll just keep watch.

Oh hey, another war droid, like the dozen others we've had to blast so far. Let me just...

~Bullshit convenient offscreen powers, activate!~

Easy.

Why did you only use that small droid-tripping grapnel here, rather than on every droid we've seen so far?
Sorry. One shot grapnel. Everybody knows you can't bring more than one. We'll have to do the rest the old fashioned way.

By which I mean, you distract the droid's blaster cannons while I shoot it to bits!

See? The system works.
Yuun is losing fluids, sir.
Let's keep things professional, sergeant.

Seriously? One fire-team standing around an explosive cannister? That's all they've got guarding their security terminals? I'm gonna do this one without my blaster, just to prove a point.

Blammo!

My favorite part is about to start. Better call Vik.
Just so we're clear, my favorite part is the demolition charges, not interacting with Vik.
Yuun understood your meaning through context and through having interacted with Specialist Tanno Vik previously, Captain.
Vik, come in. The seals are disabled – rendezvous at the core access door ASAP, over.

Oh hey, the galaxy's most obvious ambush. Let's see...

You can eat it.

You can eat it.

And you can reeeaaally eat it.

Damnit. Guess Vik made it.

*CRUNCH*

This isn't the time for your attitude, Vik.
Sergeant Yuun, rendezvous with Sergeant Dorne and stay sharp.

Well, here we are. Time to earn your pay, Vik – let's clear out these technicians and get started.
My pleasure.

Keep your mind on the job.

Wait, did you hear that?
Hear what? There's a whole lotta shooting going on right now.
No, no that.

We're being hosed.

Completely hosed.

We just lost the Empress Teta! All craft, prepare to retreat.
We're not gonna get another chance at this, Admiral! I'm placing the charges right now!
The Gauntlet wasn't supposed to be able to fire on targets outside of Hyperspace! If it can, the fleet will be scrap in minutes!
don't look don't look don't look don't look

You said it yourself, sir, retreat is not an option! Just hold them off for a few more minutes or we all die out here.
I guess we don't really have a choice... all ships, evasive action! At least make it sporting for the Empire's gunners.

Second charge is armed, boss. Just one more to go.

We got the data, but Imperial reinforcements just showed up out of nowhere – a lot more than we can hold off. Are the bombs planted? Can we pull out?
Our objectives are complete. I want you all back aboard the ship on the double!

Well, if it isn't Private Tod, all grown up. Was wondering who could be running all over my turf, causing such a mess.
Was wondering when somebody'd put up a decent fight. You're the last man between us and the breach, so let's fix that!

Old friend of yours, Captain?
Not the time, Vik! Come on, or you're going to find yourself floating home!.

drat it, what now?

...Oh.

I'm afraid that Jorgan sustained heavy injuries during our retreat from the bridge.
Despite my efforts to absorb enemy fire, he refused to give up his portion of the fight – a perfect example of Republic heroism.
More like Jorgan stubborness. Full situation report – what's Jorgan's status?
I've stabilized him for now, sir – but the wounds would certainly have been fatal had Forex not gotten him to me so quickly. Jorgan is lucky to be alive.
Stay with him and keep me updated on his status.
Of course, Captain.
Can we talk about this later? I need to set those charges off, and we shouldn't be sitting in the hangar bay when I do.
Let's get moving – double-time it!

aNYWAY,
tHAT'S REALLY ALL THERE IS,
tO REPORT ON THE SUBJECT,
oF ME GETTING HURT,

For real.

So now you might see why people find the Trooper playthrough so hard to complete. The Chapter Two story is just so thin it makes the other Republic classes' Chapter Twos look lively and complex. To refresh your memory, we had:

Quinine the Republic Privateer fighting Rogun and the Voidwolf for control of the galactic underworld, capping off with a train heist mission on an Imperial treasure ship.
Jolune was put in charge of a bickering alliance of possible-separatists, only for her efforts to almost fall apart when one of them is an infiltrator from the Emperor's Children.
R'andayn gathered a strike team of her own... to attack the Emperor directly, lost, and was brainwashed, only to be freed and learn they were destined to defeat the Emperor.

I had to stretch to make this update sound like a story, because the Gauntlet basically has none. There is no noteworthy boss apart from one tough gunnery sergeant with no dialogue, nothing goes wrong with the plan (they don't even comment when the Gauntlet starts blowing up ships, I had to add that), all you really get is one of your team being injured.

Even the Trooper Chapter One at least managed to come up with something. Your unit betrays you, you have to take them down one at a time, along the way you learn more about why they turned and who's to blame (even if they fail to stick the landing by not letting you confront Garza over it). There's some personal investment, some stakes, something that makes the story stand out. Chapter Two is just a bog-standard military mission. The "superweapon" stakes are laughable, especially since over in the Jedi Knight story they were taking down a new superweapon every planet, and no attempt is made to make it threatening or tie it to some interesting character or plot.

The Trooper's squad is okay and having to fill out your unit isn't the worst motivation, the individual missions on each planet are okay, but there just isn't any overarching thread or motivation. They introduced some characters that'll come back in Chapter three, which does have a little more of a plot going on. It's just a bit of a slog to get to here.

They should have tied it into act one a bit more - have one of the Havoc defectors survive, and have the Gauntlet be a Republic weapon he stole and the Empire reverse engineered. Then have Garza be all "The defectors know all our strategies and tactics, so you need to recruit some weirdos that are unpredictable" to justify why you need Yuun and Jerkass.

It's definitely one of the more egregious weaknesses in the story that the Gauntlet is hyped as the doom of the Republic and you just barely stop it, only for a Sith player on the other side to basically build their own Gauntlet as a mere stepping stone to their actual goals - and the Silencer basically goes on to do what you'd expect the Gauntlet would do. It's a temporary offscreen advantage that doesn't actually change anything about the galaxy (lost in the general chaos and scale of a galactic war) and eventually you hear the Republic adapts their tactics and technology to blunt that advantage, and that's the end of it.

That's what really undermines the stakes and turns this into just a regular military operation, you get the impression that weapons like these and moves to counter them happen all the time, to the point that they mostly just cancel out. They could try and make up for that with some sort of personal story or interesting characters (particularly antagonists), but they don't, so the chapter's a real dud.

Transform and waaauuuugh out!
I'll be honest, I really dislike Star Wars' over-reliance on Superweapons. It's like bad writers don't know how to increase the stakes in their story without whipping out some Galactic doomsday weapon, because they're desperately trying to mimic the first Trilogy.

I think I would say to my daughters if they were to ask me this question... A shitpost is the greatest gift that you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving and don't give it to someone lightly, that's what I would say.

This is a huge burn on The Force Awakens.

It feels like "Trooper" is kind of a class with... mechanical reasons to exist, but not story reasons? Like, the answer to "what does a Republic soldier do" was never really developed beyond "go on missions I guess?"

Republic Janitor doesn't have the same ring to it.

I guess turning Republic Commando into an MMO would be too challenging.

aNYWAY,
tHAT'S REALLY ALL THERE IS,
tO REPORT ON THE SUBJECT,
oF ME GETTING HURT,

They definitely have a problem finding a good Star Wars archetype to match the Trooper to. Smuggler is Han Solo, Jedi Knight is Luke, Jedi Consular is Obi-Wan, Sith Warrior is Darth Vader, Sith Inquisitor is Palpetine, Bounty Hunter is Boba Fett and Imperial Agent is James Bond. Who's the trooper? Basically just another Storm Trooper/Clone.

I think they lean too heavily on an almost Call-of-Duty-esque patriotic defender of Space America vibe. Your squad covers a lot of the bases for an American war movie and I guess the idea is fighting for Space Freedom is such an inherently rewarding thing that it doesn't need to be spiced up with an interesting plot or antagonist. I'm bashing it a little strongly at the moment and we'll at least give Act Three a chance before entirely dumping on it, but yeah, not a lot to work with.

Maybe the thing that makes Trooper Act 2 stand out so much as an oddity is you might've noticed there's no lightside/darkside decision at the end, a side effect of there being no boss and no dialogue. In fact, there haven't been many decisions to make at all this Act - the only notable one is choosing what to do with the weapons Vik uncovered on Balmorra, which might mildly affect what Garza and the Resistance leader say but that's about it. Without decisions, even clumsy ones without much impact on the rest of the story, it's hard to define your character or think that the story has some kind of arc to it.

I'm sort of rambling here with these posts but this part of the Trooper playthrough's bugged me for a long time and I've really wanted to talk about it.

I think the Trooper and the Bounty Hunter both have a very similar problem in that Bioware decided that each archetype shouldn't just have a personal storyline but a personal type of storyline, and their assigned types aren't exactly fertile ground. It'd have been fine if Bioware had allowed themselves the leeway to put the story first and the archetype second. Have a few planets where the quests are driven by your character having some sort of personal stake in what's going on, let the player take the initiative. But, nope, it's hunting bounties and following orders all the way down.

There are interesting stories you could tell about being just a gal with a gun in a universe full of rear end in a top hat space wizards and rock star crime lords. Unfortunately, they all went to the Imperial Agent.
