Consider also how old buildings have been cannibalized for materials - roman ruins becoming medieval houses and the like - and how common the "treasure behind danger" trope is. Like, haven't people died digging in a hole in Nova Scotia because the driftwood looks a little like someone laid out some planks to maybe hide something? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Island Now consider that maybe people in the future really need metal or something, and then this radioactve waste becomes cooking pots (self-warming pots ) and the waste gets spread all over the entire region and dumped in rivers and poo poo.

The landfill will be much easier to get into than excavating and climbing down a two mile vertical shaft, then digging through a hundred and fifty feet of collapsed tunnel and concrete.

YAY I POST THOSE SHE LIKES ME Those are my favorite too, cause while it is people loving up horribly it's rarely people getting hosed up on camera. No broken arms, legs, dead people, etc. Keep up the good work on educating your kid. I sincerely hope she takes it as a learning experience and actually stops and asks "Wait, is this a good idea?" or at least "Wait, let me grab a helmet" before trying something on camera, unlike 99% of the people in those compilations.

It was like really strong vinegar. Surprising I know. It's weird, when I was working in a lab with acids and bases and poo poo I'd be really careful, follow the rules and always wear PPE, but the minute I'm outside it's like hey, let's taste test the unknown berry/uranium dirt/whatever. Maybe humanity needs dumbass behaviour to advance, maybe Darwin hungers.

TotalLossBrain posted:Uhm yes. Uranium salts are alpha emitters, which are really bad to have in your insides. The radiological hazards of natural uranium are approximately nil. Specific activity is about 26 kilobecquerels per gram. By comparison, the natural radioactivity of a typical 70kg adult human is about 8200 becquerels. The tiny bit he tasted is utterly harmless radiologically. As you point out, it is also a toxic heavy metal. Its *chemical* toxicity is way more of a concern than its radiological toxicity. But in this case the dose was too small to be of any concern.

When you have a major case of an immune disorder where food impaction is a pretty big risk, I've always had to be careful about chewing throughly. It wasn't until the first time a case of food impaction sent me to the hospital that I found out that something was medically wrong with me. I figured I had a naturally thinner esophagus than most people, at worst. Bonus freude points for having to get it scoped out once a year or so, since there's an increased risk of esophageal cancer related to the thing.

The video set this gif is from is absolutely adorable. But the guy who does them is a pretty good source of schadenfreude. He does things like get quilled by porcupines and bitten by snapping turtles just to show people what it's like. He's also been catching and getting stung by the insects with the most painful stings int he world while he works his way up to the bullet ant. https://www.youtube.com/user/BreakingTrail/featured Geocities Homepage King has a new favorite as of 15:24 on Nov 22, 2016 |
