Worfs trial episode on DS9 is the most thing deus ex machina on that show, was there anything that actually set up the info saving his rear end other than Odo saying he's looking into stuff and the whole civilian freighter uncloaking in front of the Defiant thing being absolutely ridiculous on it's face (which no one really acknowledges)?

Usually when shows do that episode the b-story is the persons investigation that slowly reveals the Deus Ex Machina. Odo in this one just calls twice to go "nope, looks pretty legit" and then at the end he calls in and delivers.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

Defiant is better than Voyager
Sisko is better than Janeway at everything
Kira is way better than Chakotay
Odo and Worf are better than Tuvok or Tuvix
Quark is better than Neelix (as if this needed saying)
Both Dax are better than Seven and Harry
O'Brien suffers more than B'lenna
Bashir and Doctor are pretty equal really

The only bright points of Voyager are Catsuit Seven, Insaneway and Dr. Photons Be Free.

I tried to watch this show, got through the first episode but the writing was 90's as gently caress. All the characters are just the worst most lovely dated cliches imaginable and I want them all to die. My wife specially hated it and I could barely hear the show over her mocking of every character.

"Oh I'm a mysterious stoic asian, so obviously I use swords! I am honourable samurai! Asians use swords!"
"I'm the strong female protagonist! Don't mess with me because I'm strong and cool and always level headed! Also I'm beating the poo poo out of this confused guy in the first scene in the first episode just to establish how tough and powerful I am"
"I'm the 90's hacker girl! Am I autistic or just a special snowflake? One thing's for sure, I'm straight out of a 80's or 90's show about teen hackers and nerds. I'm probably going to rollerblade around the ship"
"I'm the pointlessly adversarial rear end in a top hat!!!"
"beep boop I'm the sexy android beep. I'm lady Data! What is human friendship beep does not compute beep seriously this character was written in 2015 not 1980 somehow!"

It's like someone made a parody of 90's lovely Canadian scify. The writing and characters feel 20 years or more out of date it's such absolute garbage, it's barely a step above Andromeda but feels like it came out at the same time or earlier, like it ran back to back with Tek War.

I keep threatening her that we're going to give it a go. She saw some random youtubes of Janeway and the cast and pretty quickly took a disliking to it all. "Everyone feels so wooden, it's like they're trying to be TNG without understanding what made TNG, or that TNG is done and from the 80's and it's not that era anymore and it's foolish to try to recapture it"

This made me think back to something. I was looking up something on Youtube and found a show called "Space Hospital". It's like a parody of lovely 60-90s sci-fi but it's so low budget that really almost painful to watch. In fact, I think I only got through a single episode because I noticed Claudia Christian was in an episode and I was curious what she was up to.

From what I saw, it ain't that good, but there's something that makes me think that they could ALMOST turn a corner if the folks at Adult Swim would have gotten this thing and ironed out out the problems.

It was good, but it always seemed too slow-paced for a show where everyone's supposed to be desperate to get home as fast as they can. It would have made more sense for a show like early DS9, "We're just going to sit here and see what comes along." The Next Gen theme had far more of a "We're loving going places and having adventures!" feel to it.

It is supremely hosed that Starfleet security personnel don't even have bodyarmor or anything and it contributes to every action scene in the TV show looking like poo poo

At least in DS9 we see that they actually have phaser rifles instead of just the dinky standard issue flashlights

Also they clearly have the technology for personal shields too. Maybe the idea is that personal shields would just result in the enemy using more destructive and deadly weapons. If everyone's just wearing cloth armour you can use the stun setting, if everyone's wearing phaser resistant armour and personal shields you'd end up with everyone shooting each other with weapons strong enough to blow up a city block just to get through that poo poo.
