A couple days ago I used ED-shipyards to see how much I could theoretically min-max a heavily armed Anaconda and it turns out even with multiple weapons (two large lasers, two mine launchers), SRV-hangar and some 1st class cabins I could squeeze out about 46 light years per jump. In my mind, exploring starts being fun at a minimum of 30 ly/jump and everything above 40 is a nice bonus, but not really important. It's still funny to think I could engineer an Anaconda to get close to the point other people can only reach through cheats. :v:

I gravitated towards the Greens, eventually even joining the party itself.

The Linke is a party I grudgingly accept exists, but I've learned enough about DDR-history I can't bring myself to trust a party that was once the SED, a party leading the corrupt state apparatus ...

Yes. But it makes me sad that I probably never get to try min-maxing an Anaconda like that. I'm travelling (very slowly) to the other side of the galaxy and back, so it'll be either Spring or Summer '17 before my Imperial Cutter reaches civilization again. Who knows what'll have changed by then? :smith:

This is the Exploconda I threw together using ED-Shipyards modding switches.

The newest buffs to low-power shields and light weight weapons aren't in, but on the other hand I was really lazy with drawbacks, so it's probably mostly the same when everything is accounted for. 46,9 ly per jump!

I dunno I do tend to use 2-3 ships max for everything. But if that's the ~intended way~ then that just means the specialised ships aren't generalist enough, anything small is out due to lack of internals, and anything with a low jump range is out because you have to be able to travel.

I'm pretty sure the "intended player ship" is a Cobra Mk 3 because it can do all that can it's the only one remotely affordable for a new player now.

Rank 5 mods reduce by 90%, so that yuuuuge multi-canon only weighs 1.6t. You can also lightweight all of the utility slots, the life support, and up-armor the standard for no additional weight.

A fully-loaded anaconda with fighter bay, srv, cargo, FSDI, and a full compliment of multi-canons can be modded to jump >50ly without jumponium or max-rolls!

Yeah, Type-6 is a real good choice for exploring on a budget for the reasons you just gave. It fits an appropriately-sized scoop, too.

I would not even try using turrets on the T6. The strat used to be to mount mine launchers and just poop out mines as you boost away, but the AI might have been updated since then.

I'm talking about that variant of the Type-6, the Keelback.

What does it have going for it besides more armor and hardpoints? Can it maneuver similar to a Cobra, or is it just a blockade runner of sorts?

Ugh, gently caress, I'm probably going to kill any reserve of "I still want to play this game" I have left by chasing down a shooty exploraconda build like these mentioned above.

Maybe they'll have Anaconda kits by the time I finish it, so I can jump out into the black looking all spiffy and poo poo.

The bitter irony is that the game is tons of fun when you don't have to worry about spacemoney, which means every time a good money maker comes along, everyone dogpiles because they've been playing for months and haven't gotten past an asp.

Then all of the grognards complain about how "in '84 we had to rep grind uphill both ways through the snow" and FDev listens to the Alpha-Backers forum, the denizens of which view the game as some sort of byzantine fraternity who's minimum-age should be 35, rather than listen to their QA testers.

They would have to re-write basically the entire game. The current system is peer-to-peer. The server is only used to coordinate people into instances with room left in them. So, the instance is being hosted by you or one of the other people in there with you. It's like a Dark Souls invasion, basically. Client-hosted instances that have some details informed by a server.

I'm of two minds here.

One, the tiny group of people who want this game to be eve-lite is barking up the wrong tree. This game was designed as anti-eve in more ways than one, and at its core due to the way the networking is set up.

I mean, gently caress, the fact that you can only punish, not prevent, combat logging is like clue #1.

Even if you could prevent, p2p means that an enterpreneuring client could block other clients selectively, with no way for Frontier to detect or prevent this. There's also no way to put every player at one location into the same instance (player count limit, latency limit, connectivity/routing issues). So all this whining reads more as 'I want other humans, any humans, to shoot at' more than any kind of preserving of the game's multiplayer integrity. It never loving existed.

Two, Frontier can't be seen to not care, but they've marketed this game as an MMO. These sorts of players were attracted by the PVP that the MMO label promises and want Frontier to hold their end of the deal. Which is impossible, but that's just a detail. Frontier has dug themselves into a hole, and the only way out is for them to remarket the game going forward and hope this goes away.

E: imagine for a second that this game was instead marketed as 'single player, with opportunistic co-op'. I think we wouldn't have this issue, and these people would be laughed out of the game promptly, instead of still being here 2 years on.

I guess my problem, insofar as it's a problem at all, is that gankers have no value added to my experience of playing my single player game Elite: Dangerous. So I don't add them.

There are edge cases, I'll grant. In my months of playing there has been exactly one time I earnestly thought "I wish there were other players here right now." But for day to day gameplay, why would I expose myself to the inconvenience?
