I been wantin to see a honkey dance.
Can anybody recommend some bands with a similar sound as the Iron and Wine and Calexico EP, particularly this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MePq4yH-dnc

Basically some cozy indie rock or folk rock with male vocalists, lots of instrumentation and isn't too somber (e.g. The National).

Also does anybody have any good internet radio stations they like with a fairly broad range of styles, something similar to NPR's World Cafe?

Kingsbury Manx. Neil Halstead/Mojave 3 would work, too, but he/they veer into melancholy quite a bit. the same can be said of Sufjan Stevens, but i'm assuming you already know about him

I bet you'll like Giant Sand, if you don't already know them: (starts out very somber, gets bigger and louder)

And maybe Band of Horses but you likely know them already.

I'm looking for something similar to Madvillany. I've listened to most of doom's other stuff and while I love Take Me To Your Leader and MM.. Food, they just don't seem to be on the same level in terms of production and lyrics.

I'm not too familiar with hip-hop, and the only other somewhat similar artist I've listened to is deltron 3030, so feel free to throw anything at me.

Here are some suggestions to get you started -

Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
Cat Stevens - Wild World
Bob Marley - Three Little Birds
Dr. John - Iko
Jackson 5 - ABC
Paul Simon - Graceland
Electric Light Orchestra - Living Thing
Buddy Holly - Everyday
Beach Boys - Wouldn't it be Nice
Michael Jackson - Rock With You
Peter Bjorn and John - Young Folks

Other resources would be things like the Kidz Bop series if you want stuff more like modern pop music stuff.

The Quasimoto albums may fit what you're looking for. Also check out Dr. Octagon, both Handsome Boy Modelling School records, Mos Def's "The Ecstatic", and Percee P's Perseverance. Most of those won't match up lyrically to Doom, but a lot feature heavy Madlib production (outside of the Dr. Octagon and Handsome Boy Modelling School which fit somewhat into the mold of Deltron 3030). If you want to branch out to stuff that's more generally in line with those albums check out The Cold Vein, Fantastic Damage, Beauty and the Beat, and Masters of the Universe. Most of these are older, but there are some newer cats working in a similar vein.

Also fwiw Madvillany is usually ranked among the very best rap albums ever so finding stuff exactly on that level would be difficult (although I personally think Operation: Doomsday is better but that's whatever).

I'm assuming you know all the bigger names (Portishead, Massive Attack, Morcheeba, Tricky, DJ Shadow). Outside of those, Esthero's first album is great. I also like Alpha a lot. Ladytron isn't exactly trip hop, but has the same kind of female vocals over electronic production. Wax Tailor works more in the DJ Shadow vein with a more hip-hop sound and vocal samples vs. live singing. Prefuse 73's later albums would also probably fit the bill.

First two/three albums of Archive - "Londinium" definitelly fits the bill, but later on they're moving towards prog-rock, and only on Londinium they feature vocals of Roya Arab which is truly a shame; Crustation's "Bloom", coming from the Bristols scene (and along the same lines, anything by Alpha); maybe Phantograms "Eyelids Movements" and stop on that as later on they move towards dream-pop; Funki Porcini does both trip-hop and resampling, but you'll fail to find female vocals there; Anomie Belle's first album "Sleeping Patterns"; "Ink" by The Dining Rooms; pretty much anything by Karmacoda; Iuno's both albums, but especially "Everything Nothing"; Martina's Topley-Bird (of Tricky's fame) first album "Quinxotic"; The Q4 "Sound Surroundings"; 21 hertz and 8mm, the laters "Opener"; I, Monster's "Neveroddoreven" is definitelly trip-hoppy, his newest album should be to your liking as well, though it's very remixy; Bitter:sweet, although I found them too bossanova to my liking; anything by Flunk, or Halou; definitelly "Formica Blues" by Mono; Flykkiller "Experiments in Violent Light"; Belleruche's aptly named "Turntable Soul Musik"; anything by Wax Poetic; for more ambient sound - anything but the latest Blue States. Regarding old movie sampling - have a listen to RJD2 "Deadringer" and Since we last spoke" and "The Horror" - it should fit that bill.

Grindcore is completely not my area of expertise, so this suggestion might be a bit off but you might enjoy the UK band Doom. They were an angry, dirty Discharge style crust-punk band that was very influential in terms of the later grind bands.

ECM have put out a lot of similar sounding music to this (i.e. music that exists at some weird intersection of jazz, chamber music and world music).

This probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, but here's an example from one of their albums I have:

As was mentioned up-thread, Madvillainy is pretty much a 'perfect' album where both artists styles compliment eachother so well that it can be hard to separate the two, so looking for recommendations similar to it is always gonna be a case of compromising somewhat, especially with an MC as unique as DOOM.

Your best bet is diving into Madlib's discography, which can be very uneven but when its good it's gold. For Madvillain-esque stuff I'd suggest checking out Pinata with Freddie Gibbs, which IMO is his strongest and most consistent release since MV. Gibbs is a very different kind of rapper than DOOM but he's one of the only other artists able to ride Madlib's beats the same way he does. The whole thing is pretty accessible and a really fun listen. I'd also suggest checking out Jaylib, his collab album with J Dilla, which features some pretty bad rapping but some of the best beats of either artists' careers.

If that interests you then consider looking deeper into J Dilla's output- His final album Donuts is pretty widely considered to be a masterpiece and one of the few albums I'd put on the same pedestal as Madvillainy in terms of being a 'perfect' piece of work. Like MV it can feel disjointed and a bit jarring on the first listen, but when it clicks it really clicks and there's not really anything else like it out there.

The Quasimoto albums are all pretty highly regarded by madlib fans but I've never really been a fan of his rapping voice on them so ymmv.

For DOOM-related stuff, check out Earl Sweatshirt, who's probably the closest you're going to get to Doom in terms of lyrics and flow. His debut album Doris is a good place to start. Also try Czarface, who also play with the whole supervillain angle and feature lots of clips of old cartoons and superhero serials on their tracks. All their albums are good but 'Every Hero Needs a Villain' is probably their strongest effort.

Not sure how much of the obvious you know about, but: Soft Cell (they're more than just Tainted Love!), Yazoo (go by Yaz in the States), Erasure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiKVjS3gR88)

Honestly, a lot of the echo drenched synthpop rubs me the wrong way compared to plinkier, more intimate stuff. That said, Cut Copy does an updated take to heart-sleeve synthpop I like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFzPIyaH8Jw
