They operate off a blasting cap or similar detonation method, but the vessel is excellent for allowing the internal pressure to build up before rupturing the case in a powerful explosion. It's like a big pipe bomb: it lets low explosives like black powder have a stronger detonation. But it's all measured in fractions of a second.
