At this point, I don't think it is possible anymore for this basho to be a disappointment in any way. There's a chance that this could be the most entertaining tournament in a long time.

makes sense. He has a real shot at the win and it would be garbage if the toughest opponent he got was ikioi.

He did shave off his super powers though :/

Bring me the head of Auguste Escoffier.
Was flicking through Ishiura's twitter to see if there was anything about his workout regime and found this from when he was 16:

Also he's in the same heya as Hakuho.

From what I understand, Hakuho actually scouted him himself. At least, Hakuho usually refers to him as his apprentice (内弟子) in his tweets.

So this calendar year there have been 7 Ozeki performances that have left them kadoban (2xGoeido 2xKotoshogiku 3xTerunofuji), but then Kotoshogiku and Goeido have each won tournaments this year. Kisenosato has been very consistent for the last two years, and won't finish worse than 67-23. Terunofuji has clearly been struggling with a lot of injuries, but has still done enough to maintain his rank in spite of them.

I don't think you can reasonably argue that any of them aren't good enough to be Ozeki, but are any of them ever going to be able to go further?

Meanwhile Hakuho could easily lose against Harumafuji and Goeido and record his first ever single digit score as Yokozuna and his worst uninjured result for 10 years. Does he have enough enthusiasm left for another 3 or 4 basho in order to pass Chiyonofuji and Kaio's win record? Is that even a target he cares about?

Also Tochinoshin owns

If Goeido gets his poo poo together he could potentially, when he's on he's really really good. But he's really inconsistent. Koto is a one trick pony (it's a good trick though), so no way there. IDK about Kise or Terunofuji.

If Goeido gets more consistent, definitely, but the rest are doubtful in my mind. Giku is too one-dimensional, Terunofuji just can't seem to stay healthy, and Kise appears to not have the mental fortitude for the task.

Also, I haven't seen any mention by Hakuho of looking to break the record, but why the hell not if he's this close? He could easily take the record by this time next year. He can still clearly go, but if he doesn't put up 11 or more wins each time he might just call it a day since he doesn't seem to be the accumulator record holder type. Plus, he holds pretty much every record that he can realistically attain aside from Consecutive Wins (which I don't see him getting now) and Number of Basho at Yokozuna (he needs 7 more to take that record).

I think probably Kisenosato could do it but he's only 6 months younger than Hakuho and Kakuryu and older than Goeido so he's running out of time.
Even if all the yokozuna retire its not going to help him much though, he always loses to young guys.

It doesn't feel right to kill an unarmed man... but I'll get over it.
Tochinoshin is great. Never going to get tired of him hauling huge dudes around (when he's uninjured).

Ishiura shouldn't've shaved, lost all his drat power.

I wish I could find it again on SumoForum but I remember Kisenosato's winrate being statistically better than Kakuryu as well as many past Yokozuna.

Kisenosato puts up very consistent numbers, he just has a bad habit of choking up at the wrong time.

I would have slated Terunofuji to become a Yokozuna when he was doing such great gently caress off sumo but loving injuries, man. So disappointing to me.

What a year that was.
  • 5 different yusho winners in 2016, the most since 5 also won in 2000
  • 4 jun-yusho for Kisenosato (12 total now), and the best record in all makuuchi - 69 for 90. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. I don't care if he nevers makes yokozuna, but the dude has done well enough to deserve at least one yusho in his career.
  • 2 Japanese yusho after none since 2006
  • The most exciting group of youngsters in a long time
  • Hakuho finally appearing to be mortal

There's already a Wakaichiro fan channel in Youtube Japan. Anyway, they have all 3 of his maezumo fights.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Mn9g7wkwfI

(no sound)
Unfortunately maezumo was a bit weird this time so the top 3 guys never fought each other. 80% of the entrants were from Isegahama beya so they couldn't fight each other, so the 3 non-isegahama guys fought them and none of the Isegahama guys won once. Wakaichiro is in Musashigawa-beya. Musashigawa-beya is led by ex-Musashimaru Yokozuna and opened 3 years ago. He's part Samoan so I don't think the lovely stuff that happened with Brodi will happen here.

This is a TV program about the heya but Wakaichiro was going through the joining process so he isn't in it, but you can see what the lifestyle is like.

People are being extremely hushed about it, bullying is one of the predominant ideas. There's also a good amount of evidence that his Oyakata was being pretty negligent, some Japanese tabloids even accusing him of not supplying enough food for his Rikishi.

And the Lord said, "Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
There's also the fact that his early results weren't that good, it was clear that he wasn't going to be sekitori anytime soon. Of course, an untreated injury could be to blame for that.
