Wistful of Dollars posted:I hate it for two reasons (so far) As someone who works at a McJob, the fact that the insanity of holiday shopping encroaches ever further onto holidays where I want to spend time with my family is infuriating. Last year my girlfriend had to leave Thanksgiving dinner at like 4:00 because the retail outlet she work at was opening for their Black Friday sales at 6:00 PM on Thursday, in the middle of Thanksgiving. This poo poo makes my blood boil, and I'm glad that even people like JRRRose are calling it out because making people work lovely customer service jobs in the middle of holidays is loving awful and Christmas is by far the worst offender.

There's a tiny, tiny bright side of working Thanksgiving, holiday pay. Time and a half wasn't worth it though in retail. But double time, cooking at a hospital? And I can spend one of my PLT days for it to be triple pay? Hell yeah I'll volunteer.

Fun fact: at least in my state, you need to have been with a company for six months before they're required to give you holiday pay. If some kid takes your order at the counter on the way to Christmas at grandma's, there's a pretty good chance he's doing it for flat minimum wage!

But basically the point I was trying to make is that if you don't think Christmas starting in October is a real problem for people that has a meaningful impact on their lives, I envy you never having had to work a lovely service sector job. The execution of the comic is JRRRose as gently caress but there's some real working-class angst behind this one.

I am in no way disagreeing, to note. Having been a retail slave for many years. Then getting fired for eating one piece of bacon. That's a fun tale. I also never got to enjoy New Year's, usually having to be back in early on Day, whether I worked Eve or not. But yeah, I wouldn't go back unless I had to. Unless it were for a sane company, like CostCo. And I feel for retail workers and try to be as nice to them as I can, since I was there once.

As I understand it, albeit mostly from secondhand summaries, the point of the recount is to reinforce and reaffirm voting checks and standards, and is not in any way an attempt at (or expectation for) overturned outcome. But then, ignoring all limits of possibility, I can imagine the kind of apoplectic reaction certain cartoonists would have.
