They're all post-75, though, so you'd have to go through the referee rigmarole and can't use any of the cheap motors.

Just cool cheap engine swaps in modern cars. You can swap older stuff without any hassle, and modern stuff is doable if you go through the hassle of keeping all the emissions stuff, do some paperwork, and use a crate motor or a legit LS pull (i.e. not an iron truck motor).

boo, well at least your price range puts you solidly in good condition non-turbos which will have moderate maintenance especially if you don't do stuff yourself but is still just as cool and is fun on a bun. It's a 30 year old german sports car so be ready for dumb poo poo but I guess that's why the prices tend to be so low. I personally think they look better than most 911s and would own one if they had airbags/any safety stuff so my daughter could ride in it.

Had to move some poo poo around in the garage so I thought I should move the cars to be safe so I didn't drop stuff on them. Backing out the porch turned into a 90 minute drive with a mix of highway and town. It was pretty cool this am but the roads are absolutely clear and dry and it just loved the cold dense air. It was almost unbearable keeping it at only 10-20K over the speed limit. I wanted to open it up so badly it was torture. It was an auto equivalent of getting blue balled.

How's that now? Because the cheap ones are in complete maintenance debt?

I've been DDing mine for 7 years now and aside from regular maintenance I've needed to replace the rear wheel bearings. I started out by actually getting the thing back into proper shape before all of this, of course. I put about 10k miles a year on it and I've been left without the ability to get home exactly once, and that was just a tire (gently caress using a 30 year old compact expandable spare).

A BRZ is a modern car. It feels heavy and insulated compared to an earlier manual steering rack 944.
Like if you put me in a blindfold and earmuffs, led me to a skidpad, and gave me 10s each on a 944, a BRZ, and a new Civic, I would have much more trouble telling the newer cars apart.

That's a pretty artificial test, but I guess what it gets at is that the controls (skinny big wheel, floor-hinged pedals with nice heel-toe setup) and interior do a make a difference in how I perceive a car drives.
The 944 just feels like a more delicate instrument, and 70% of that is from the way the wheel grips and the big throw of its shifter.

I had a $2000 944, and I would think about it again if that deal came up.

You don't invest money into a 944. You throw it into a hole, like all other cars.

While I haven't driven a BRZ I'll tell you why I like 944s: they are totally not a new car. They are raw and make you feel connected with the road in a way that even a modern 911 GT3 didn't do as well for me.

It's not for everyone, but it's a thing.

Thanks, I'm pretty excited. I plan to run the near stock map for a while to just get used it and driving a manual again but it's nice that it's pretty much 'done' as far as power mods go for a street car . It's also great that the $20k+ in mods reduced the price to almost $10k under what a similar condition stock car would go for even though it's a well-regarded kit upgrade rather than various individual parts. Now it just has to pass inspection then get shipped. :toot:

It's going to be an adventure, that's for sure. I'm really eager to get my hands on it and see more of what the PO that did the original mods had done because the current owner is not really a performance guy and doesn't seem too interested in the details beyond big HP and perfect cosmetics. He runs a paintless dent removal company that services some of the higher end local dealerships so I think it was more of a status symbol for him. I'm really hoping that it has the GT2 clutch conversion because that's a bitch and I think it does since the ad says GT2 clutch but that's not a thing on TTs but he has a bigass stack of receipts that should shine some light on the details. Also I'm going to take it to one of the local specialists for a full rundown when it arrives.

It did pass PPI yesterday at the Porsche dealership since there's not a big choice of independent shops in that area plus the service department already knows of the car since they did all the routine maintenance for him. Now it's just scheduling a transport.

8 year old plus cars drop off fast because you can't get a loan. 1999 - 2004 911 are all identically priced as far as I can tell. Just look at a ton of sales and build a curve.

There's classic car loans that are actually nicer than a traditional car loan but I'm not sure how much tighter the approval process was compared to traditional. I originally applied and got approved for 19k @3.04% and 36m when I was looking for a 996 C2 but when I decided on a 996TT I just used a built in way to ask for new terms without a credit check and had 35k approval in a few hours. Then when you agree to terms within a couple weeks window, they just deposit the funds in your bank account within 24 hours with your agreement that it's actually for a car and boom, you can have cash prior to actual purchase and a title without a lien. It's really an unsecured personal loan with a couple caveats but was a terrific process.

That was with Lightstream and I know there's a couple others out there but I really liked how slick the Lightstream process was and would definitely recommend looking into it.

If your credit is good enough this no longer matters with things like lightstream and other online lenders. I got approved for $45k no questions asked when looking at 996TT's and then got $20k at 1.9% for my s2k. There is a difference in rate when buying from a dealer or private party but they don't check this at all. The didn't for me anyway.

Taking out a loan is common sense as long as you can afford it when rates are as low as they are. It goes hand in hand with trying to hit the slowest depreciating cars because at the end of a few years you can sell it for just under what you have into without much risk. 996TTs are likely bottomed out and are showing signs of appreciating now so unless there's major maintenance required I might be able to make some money if I sold it in 5 years especially considering I'm pretty sure I got it for well under market because the listing was too vague considering how heavily modded it is.

Even though his post might have been a little misguided in relation to this thread specifically, I think his point is that not having the disposable income to outright buy a used vehicle which has notorious repair costs might be a questionable decision. I can't say I completely disagree with him.

Hopefully you have the disposable income to do any "necessary" repairs that might come up, because if you don't that is a pretty big signal you probably shouldn't have bought it in the first place.
