Well, I'm back to getting runes at least. But then I decided to do Elf 3 because I had super high MR and getting abyss'd is the only real threat there right? One of the sorcerers hasted himself and did 80-90 damage in one of my turns through my 35 AC with a blast of damnation + corrosive blast and that was that. Does corrosive blast also ignore AC or did I just unlucky rolls? It looks like I was initially hit for 39 damage from the corrosive blast and then took another 14 (splashed by acid)? Anyway, there was literally no reason to be in Elf other than greed and hubris and I feel dumb.

Seems like bad luck. Elf has really good loot, and you honestly need the XP now that Lair, lair branches, and Orc have been cut back so much. No reason to skip it unless you're a stabber. Sorcerers and High Priests are definitely the most dangerous elves, though. Speleothing fucked around with this message at 05:06 on Nov 26, 2016 |

Finally got a vampire necromancer off of the ground. Managed to get through 10 levels of the dungeon and to the second floor of lair. Had a hell of a time putting down some undead uniques. All that time and not a single spellbook drop. Finally put down by a pack of blink frogs. All I had was that loving starter necro book.

If you play VpNe you really want to pick a god that complements your holes, which for VpNe is mid-game killing power. Kiku is solid (and probably the best option) since he'll give you the corpses you'll need to raise an army of the undead. You can also just transition into a hybrid build and pick up the first usable long blade/short blade on the ground and train it up but Vp works better if you can get stabs going. Alternatively play an EE, a start that can actually carry a Vp for a while.

Take Slime slow as a non-heavy armour tabber and you'll obtain a lot of experience that way. Good way of bolstering yourself for the end game. It's far more even in terms of dangerous encounters than Elf.

According to my stat sheet, I've played this game 1,478 times, with only 15 wins going back to my first in version 0.10.0 back in (holy poo poo) 2012. Only got 14 runes because my GrFi^Ru was too scared of Tomb and at that point I wanted to just clock a win. I'm pretty terrible at this game but I keep coming back to it again and again

D 10 - xxxbow of freezing Lair 6 - manual of crossbows D 13 - artifact xxxbow of electricity Okay fine crawl I get the message I'll train crossbow skill, geez. Related pro tip: Basically every character should pick up the first crossbow they find and just fire it at distant enemies as they walk to you. The potential damage with any xbow is amazing compared to stones and sometimes you'll just kill enemies outright. You don't need to invest any skill, the huge recovery time doesn't matter when they waste it walking towards you.

First time I've gotten 14 runes, up from my previous best of 5. I've only got gehenna left and then I'll finally be able to say I've "fully" beaten this game. In hindsight I really should have left tomb for last, its so incredibly deadly and I was so incredibly stupid for not taking potions of lignification with me or buying shops out of scrolls of fog and silence. But I did it, and now I never have to go back there again.

It's been a long time since I played. Is there a reason a MiFi of Oka could not cast any spells whatsoever? Am I right in thinking Oka doesn't prevent spellcasting? I found some good spellbooks and was looking to use them but no matter what magic skills I train I still have a 100% failure rate. The only other thing I could figure is I do have an MR+ armor on, would that matter?

Yeah, its to stop the death curses (and torment) from slaughtering you if you get caught somewhere you can't retreat. Since I'm playing a formicid I can stand toe to toe with literally anything but getting hit with death curses/torment when I couldn't get into a murder hole or stairdance made up all my near death experiences.

The problem is low int combined with very heavy armor, which gives a massive penalty to spell success. MR+ is magic resistance and affects enemy spells being able to affect you, not your own spellcasting. The only equip that will actually fully stop you from casting is the -Cast malus. Trog doesn't let you use spells at all and gets super mad if you do, which you might have confused Oka with.
