my 2c as a gay dude is they could certainly Do Better and have more LGBTQ or whatever non-cis/hetero guests, but they haven't even ironically been bigoted against LGBTQ people

the extent to which trans-people have been mentioned is joking about working in the trans Muslim gentrification store or whatever

Chapo has been pretty neutral w/r/t sexuality which is both bad and good

They mention trans-people frequently on the show, when they read Rod Dreher and David French bathroom panic articles to make fun of their bigotry.

Sure, I guess my point is I'd like them to tackle LGBTQ issues directly rather than just mocking weirdo bathroom warrior pundits.

It seems to me that transgendered people and immigrants are the easiest pickings for discrimination and will be subject very soon to a lot of intense bullshit. Now that we're living with President Trump I'd appreciate more activism from the crew.

e: which isn't a judgment on the show really, it has taken a more activist and grim tone post-election. But, now more than ever it's really important to push left/progressive issues and activism in addition to our twice-weekly dosage of irony-bro leftist comedy.

If you're worried, go loving do something in your community.

There's a weird requirement people have for leftist comedy that it must Do Good instead of just be funny and true, the only thing anyone ever tries to get other comedy to do. I wouldn't mind more activism in some of live performances and donations or whatever but like the problem with this vase is not that it doesn't have enough handles.

That was part of why I mentioned The Daily Show, since it also juggled both Comedy and Trying To Do The Right Thing.

The general consensus in terms of criticism with lefty pals who happened to disagree with them mostly tends to be just that they share a lot of the same goals and do work on them, but just happen to have bones with the previously queer issues and the foray to go into terms like "smoothbrain" or quips about autism. Two interviews with them do seem to acknowledge that the show isn't exactly for everyone and rather than attempt to sell them on such, they just want folk to at least agree on their general reasoning.

I do find it a bit sad when they go "Oh they had issues when this happened so clearly they're ClintonBots"

There probably is room for leftist npr out there somewhere and chapo deserves at least part of the credit for that. I know people who thought Bernie was The Left and are now very into socialism due to chapo. It should be more inclusive and I think it will become that due to their responsiveness to well reasoned criticism, but I'd rather have rowdy kids here and respectable leftists somewhere else.

There is a leftist NPR but it's on satellite radio. I'm not the biggest fan of the current slate of hosts though. Thom Hartmann is one of the better ones but he's getting up there in years at this point

Thom Hartmann has a perfectly fine alternate host and I'm still convinced he'll be doing this longer than Larry King.

I think it's good to have some rowdy and offensive people on the left. Not saying everyone should be like that but there are a lot of dirtbags and failsons out there who could be drawn to libertarianism or worse, the alt right, so I think it's great that the left has an outlet for those lost souls.

Yea I don't think we need every voice to be Chapo, but I think The Woke Zoo Crew has a place in appealing to their crowd and it's kinda nice to have an alternative version of dirtbags that don't randomly go on 'and ya know if you think about it ALL lives matter, am I right guys, people are too PC' tangents and poo poo. That reminds me, I started listening to an episode of Cum Town and they had a few good jokes but overall it wasn't doing it for me and then they start complaining about political correctness and social justice warriors and saying "now I don't want to be lumped in with the other people complaining about this but--" and they lost me. I like that when Chapo says something off-color they don't go out of their way to defend or explain it, they just move on.

I disagree that chapo represents a pied piper distracting people from organizing or something. I know that I wouldn't have even known about DSA and a lot of protest groups if I hadn't followed the people they've had on the show. I think there is absolutely value in criticizing politicians and media people on the left side of things, especially when they are so desperate to put the blame for Hillary's loss on the wrong things. We shouldn't be cutting people a break because they voted for Obama and aren't slavering racists but are lovely to Palestinians or the poor either.

Yeah Merrit's DadFeelings having "Fictional Joe Biden" isn't necessarily this blind endorsement of the real one but rather a goofy analysis of that cartoony version that has been showing up on those Obama and Biden twitter chatlog posts.

He has a contrarian streak, but I think he's trying to position himself to support the Bernie wing if they actually get some leadership in the Dems.

"Why is leftism so boring" to my mind is more "why are the Democrats so boring," and, in general, "why isn't politics fun". There's so much to unpack in answering those questions that I can't do them justice, but basically my entire life Politics has been A Very Serious Thing where all the hippies need to get haircuts and wear suits and ties if they want to win the favor of the American people (i.e. The Establishment), and the height of political fun is some sort of upper-class fundraiser? (I'm guessing these attitudes come from the Dems desperately going third-way after the post-Carter landslide and RFK's assassination.)

In contrast, the fun leftists I've encountered in my anecdotal experience do transgressive and politically unacceptable things like doing drugs and protesting while not being upper class, which make all the boomers I know act like they're literally the devil because those kinds of people are breaking the law.

Obviously the most recent GOP victory has revealed that the whole law-abiding suit and tie stuff is totally irrelevant so long as you say literally whatever the voter wants to hear in the easiest way to understand, which can also be done in a way that's transgressive and fun to watch. For well-off white people, that is.

Just my guesses but many of you here know more about leftism in practice and leftist history

Listening to Chapo Trap House for the first time ever this week has been super, super good. I'm not sure if I actually care about missing out on this initially because it's incredibly refreshing to hear something that isn't incredibly self-serious from before the election. I started with Episode 2, then the latest one (was 60), and then have gone back to Episode 3.

Hearing episode 13 the other day can be the next episode and just blame all of the weird verb tenses on a computer glitch or them being super wasted.
