It's both, but pronounces differently. The Hessische "dat" is more guttural, while the Norddeutsche "datt" is flatter, tending towards a "dett" in some areas.

Who talks like that? I live in (southern) Hessen and I hear "dat" mainly from people who grew up in the Pott or Cologne.

That said, Hessisch is bad, as are all other dialects.

are what I mean exactly. I grew up with almost dialect free german parents in London and when we moved near Frankfurt, this is the first thing I picked up on.
