I watched Code Geass a bunch when I was younger and liked it a lot but I dunno if I'd like it as much now. Mainly I remember the bizarre "we ran out of ideas on how to move the plot forward" thing they did with Euphie and I wonder if there was just way more of that that I missed when I was a kid.

I rewatched it not long ago and that didn't seem like that to me. They'd already established that Geass powers can go berserk with Mao, and Euphemia proposed a perfect solution before the show was over,of course it was gonna go to poo poo.

Oh yeah poo poo, I actually suspected that might have been the case but I forgot because it was so long ago. I didn't know that it was confirmed that was the actual reason, but it doesn't surprise me.

Yeah I guess I go back/forth on it because I can sorta buy that they set it up? But then again it feels super contrived that Lelouch would start to explain himself in this very specific way that would cause that mixup, at exactly the worst possible time. Then again the universe seems to seriously have it out for Lelouch at every possible juncture so maybe that's nitpicky.

I agree with this, but it still felt pretty contrived to have Lelouche go "Heh, my power is so cool I could even tell you to murder all the Japanese and you'd do it, good thing neither of us wants to do that right Euphie? ...Euphie?" Like, for him to use that example, of all things, and to phrase it as he did, felt aggressively unnatural to me, so then I'm watching the ensuing scene less overcome by the tragedy and more wanting to grab Lelouche and say "WHY WOULD YOU EVEN loving SAY THAT YOU loving WEIRDO."

Rather, controversial that he was. Because it seems pretty obvious to me that him being the driver was a strong implication. He did his thing to try to end a truly catastrophic war and was going to get out of the way so things could hopefully proceed on a better path.

It felt pretty thematically appropriate to me that Lelouch (spoilers I guess since I think some people said they haven't seen it yet) paid for a better future with his life. The funny part was people getting into huge dumb arguments over it, and a lot of people in that camp shouted about how Lelouch being the driver would be the dumbest thing, would ruin the series, that people were just grasping at straws because they couldn't handle it, etc. Would just be funny to me if they were proven wrong. That said tho I'm betting some Geass/magic poo poo will be involved.
