Really positive impressions from the beta. Did not see any new issues pop up and every balance change I experienced felt spot-on. Still haven't tried the handguns and I'm worried about those, but I sampled a lot of the other changes. Some random observations:

-Not mentioned in the patch notes, the glaive was nerfed. Less damage and swing speed, and it seems to recoil off walls all the time? Could be huge.

-The new axe cleans up now. Kills nightmare clan rats in one bodyshot, and the swing speed is up so you can actually carve your way through with it now.

-Not mentioned in the patch notes, the repeater handgun got a massive buff to fire rate and accuracy. The alternate attack is seriously good now because it's accurate enough to actually hit things with it, the shots come out very quickly, and there's way less recoil. A solid option against roger now. Seriously, this is how accurate it (and the brace) are when standing still with targeteer. And the brace doesn't even lose accuracy when moving anymore.

-Something in the patch notes implied they fixed instantly dunking roger with a bomb in an enclosed space.

Nope.

-The blunderbuss and grudge raker can butt-bash incredibly fast now, to the point where having a melee weapon at all becomes superfluous, and they can infinitely stun stormvermin by doing this, which is hilarious. Meanwhile they can kill stormvermin and ratling gunners by shooting now, which is awesome.

-For reasons unclear, active reload was not removed from the blunderbuss and grudge raker. So they lost nothing and gained about ten times the viability with the buffs.

-The bolt staff is still really powerful against specials, but you have to charge it up to make it pierce rats now--you get 0, 1, or 2 rats pierced based on how charged it is. The autoaim is incredibly toned down too, which I think will make it both fair and less frustrating, because the bolts actually only home in on things in front of them. Feels good from first impressions.

-Because one handed weapons got better headshot bonuses, you can kill a nightmare clan rat with one normal sword swing to the head now. So sienna's melee just got pretty awesome.

-Kruber now says he's "out of ammo" anytime he uses a medkit. This is good.

They don't mention anything about it but in addition to the general 1h bonuses the Elf's single-sword now does more damage with its head, and the thrust on the third stroke pierces armor, comes out faster, and hurts a fuckton more than it used to.

Get Killing Blow on it and it's actually really goddamn good now.

Actually, rereading the patch notes, I noticed this in the section with the Victor Saltzpyre weapon changes:

FatShark posted:

Repeating Handgun:

Increased damage to armored targets
Tighter crosshair
Headshotting
Tweaked bullet spray attack
Increased attack speed

so no idea if they just put that in the wrong section, or if that was supposed to also apply to repeater pistol (because they are totally the same weapon, right?) or what.

I used to play the poo poo out of the first Killing Floor and was on board to get KF 2 until I played a free weekend and released it was just the same thing as the original with a new coat of paint and triple the DLC.

That said, is Vermintide worth picking up to fill the Killing Floor shaped hole in my heart?

Couple questionable changes like Devastating Blow being killed, Friendly Fire on all of Sienna's attacks, blocking with medkits and tomes being made pointless, but they listened to feedback about all the non-specialized weapons and made them compete better with the others with some exceptions. When they finish the Pick and Falchion there'll be information on that as well. I say this because, for example, the power attack on the Pick is being treated as a light attack and does the same damage as the wide swinging. Despite some nerfs the game is more approachable than ever and almost all weapons are suddenly viable in pretty much any scenario. There's some talk that the loot ladder got nerfed and there's less oranges on the Cata and Nightmare ladders again but  on that one. They increased the amount of Stormvermin in patrols and they probably kept some other buffs on them from CB like a bit more health.

Outside of weapons, game performance has been significantly improved. Almost zero load time for maps, no frame loss to speak of, you name it. I think, having played long enough, they finally fixed the Ratling Gunner sliding after taking DoT damage.

When you block their attacks they recoil. Off Balance only applies a debuff that multiplies the damage they take from allies.

I left this game as the scheielesswhatever map just came out as DLC. I'm glad fatshark got their stuff together but it's too late in my opinion and I dont think I would come back despite the great changes. This game is hella fun to play but I'm already used to the gameplay enough to not care anymore.

I'd like to add that after watching Space Hulk Deathwing streams, I can say that Vermintide is probably the superior game. It took me awhile to place it but I think I finally figured out what was bothering me from watching the streams. The special Tyranids in deathwing don't feel very threatening at all. I felt bored watching them. All of the special rats gives Vermintide a random but very fun play through. There's always that feeling of dread when a packmaster yanks someone away or a globadier tossing in some clouds in your holdout spot. The loot system also helps making your character feel unique and powerful. Although Deathwing is in Beta right now, I'm not feeling too optimistic with the release being two weeks away. RIP another gamesworkshop game probably.

I suppose I could part with one and still be feared...
So I just spent a fun LAN weekend killing lots of rats with a bunch of friends and it sorta rekindled my enjoyment of this game so I'm looking forward to the dorf DLC. I was reading the beta patch notes and wow that's a lot of changes. For anyone in the beta, is the bolt staff worth using at all now? And what exactly did they do to the beam staff? "Tweaked" doesn't tell you very much. Assuming those changes go live what's the go-to loadout on the wizard going to be? Adding FF to everything seems like it makes the BW as much of a liability to the team as anything else.

edit: reading it again, it seems:

1) Charged fireballs now penetrate normal rats meaning the correct use is to aim it at the floor in the middle of a pack so you can maximise the effect of the blast. Decent buff that maybe gets round the biggest problem of the fireball staff as a crowd-killer weapon?

2) Max-charge conflag now leaves an incendiary bomb effect on the ground. Buff in that it'll do more damage to rats, nerf in that you stop your team moving through it until the fire fades, another big nerf in that it now does friendly fire, removing the conflag's one big advantage.

3) Who knows what's happened to the beam staff, it's hard to tell from the patch notes. The shotgun blast is even killier but now does friendly fire? The beam ramp-up has been "tweaked" in a mysterious way?

4) Bolt: unlocked fire will only do body shots, but locked fire will headshot the first target it hits. "Tweaked" trueflight behaviour, I hope that means no more weird attempts to chase targets it can't hit but who knows? "Rescaled" targets hit but charged vs uncharged, I assume that means an uncharged bolt will hit fewer and a fully charged one will hit more but again who can say? Basically the net effect seems to make it even more specialised as a special/SV deleter and reduce its ability to do crowd-killing which it was already pretty meh at?

edit:

quote:

So it'll still autoaim at a special in front of you, but to get it to do that you have to charge it for longer? And it'll no longer autoaim at something on the edge of your screen? That seems like a good change I guess.

If your experience was exclusively facerolling the game with the most OP stuff and you wanted it to always be that way then yeah this patch is a loss, but for gently caress's sake, if you wanted to do literally anything else then there are effectively twice as many weapons in the game now

I haven't tried everything and can't yet comment on how the trueflight, wizard staffs or handguns fared, but there's no denying that this is a massive balance shakeup that has made a huge number of formerly-unseen contenders viable on nightmare, and potentially on cataclysm. The axe and the shotguns are good now? What the gently caress? I still can't even process that fact after months of radio silence from fatshark and no attempts to fix the incredible balance problems the game had since drachenfels (and honestly since release).

Even the bolt staff is still more powerful than it was when the game launched because it now has a homing lock-on that doesn't actively try to troll you. Originally the bolts flew in a straight line and were a pseudo-handgun for the wizard. "B-b-b-but my bolt staff" :qq: should not even be on your mind when the game went from maybe 50% of the content being viable on nightmare to quite possibly 100% of it. Shake the dust off your axe and get chopping
