Despite it being the worst starter type, I actually find myself picking the grass starter more often than not, starting gen III and onwards. Treecko, Turtwig, Chespin, and Rowlet were all easy picks for me.

Gen V was a bit of an odd duck though, having no good starters of any type.

A funky setup? Something like playing a Japanese cart on a Japanese DS with game language set to English or something?

Literally that, yeah. There's a lot of misinformation on the web (ie the effect or rather non-effect of Everstones on the shiny process) but I believe the gist is that since Gen VI has language as an option in all regions (I think???), it's easier now to view the method as solely based on the language tag of the Pokemon. A lot of Faqs online still have region or country listed as the main flag for success in the Masuda method which winds up muddying the waters when you're trying to find guides on how poo poo actually works. It didn't help that I was using JPN Dittos from my JPN White save which made me even more paranoid (JPN dittos that technically originally belonged to me on JPN software set to English ahhhhhhhh)

I haven't picked a fire starter yet, although I did use a Charizard that my buddy traded to me before resetting his save back in middle school. I think my track record is about 50/50, now, if you count choosing Chikorita in HeartGold. Squirtle, Totodile, Mudkip (!!!), Piplup, Snivy, Chespin, Rowlet.

I believe it works entirely off the language tag now, yeah.

Hey guys! I was wondering if anyone could help me out. Im currently going through the game and would like to use an A-vulpix, and a mimikyu, but I don't want to wait for them. Can anyone send me eggs so I can nickname them? Nature and ability doesn't matter but if you can get HAs or the better abilities all the better! Also if you can pass any mareanie along I just don't want to have to worry about finding it, ha. I don't really have anything special to send back since I'm only on the grass trial so I understand if there are no takers, but just thought I'd ask.

Yeah, he went straight into my party as soon as I got a good look at him and realized what he was. He's not bad, either, at least where I'm at in the main story. He gets some of my favorite Fighting moves, and he can learn Scald off a TM.

I always pick Grass for my starter, and I always buy the version that's closer to Red. That's my little Pokemon tradition.

For my fellow Beast Ball masochists, I got myself a Beast Ball Minior if anyone's interested. It's a 255 catch rate so not exactly impressive, but it could save you some time and a few balls. I'll breed Naive ones for myself, but can do Adamant or others if people want.

I've got a Gyrados who's doing pretty well, but he's a little boring. I already have other options in the party for loving up most of the things that water and flying are good against. I might use that slot for the Mimikyu that I want to get.
