They sound close enough that people get them confused sometimes. It's going to be another one of those situations where the dictionaries wimp out and go along with it just because people talk that way. :argh:

The major dictionaries people use are descriptive, not prescriptive. They record the language as it's used, not as the author believes it should be used. They're not wimping out, they're acknowledging reality, even if that leads to unfortunate losses of clarity like "literally" not always literally meaning literally.

Enjoy your "thou"s and "ye"s then I guess, but I'm not sure how much of a market there is for a book that doesn't allow you to tell what someone actually means when they use a word like "computer", "monitor", or "mouse".

Good dictionaries will have "usage note" where they tell "this meaning is completely wrong by the way, but a lot of people use it anyway".

Prescriptivism is good for teaching how language should be spoken; descriptivism is good for explaining how language is actually spoken. That makes descriptivism more useful generally; especially for foreign speakers who stumble upon some weird idiomatic usage that they don't understand.

Battler, the literal stupidest man on earth. Why are you even here, Battler, why did you come back to this place so you could fuck literally everything up?

If there were a great court of the afterlife, where the gods laid all a persons actions and motivations behind them on the table and argued where you would go as a result, this particular case would be a fascinating one to hear. Castro was one of those people you hear everything about, from virtue to monstrosity... what does such a man deserve, at the end of 90 years in full? Damned if anyone's going to come to a consensus anytime soon.

People always surprise me. They have like many pockets and they put stuff in different pockets, and sometimes they manage to put the same uncompatible thing in the same pocket (percepcion dissonance). So everything is possible.

Recently (well, relatively recently) members of the Russian communist party stood side by side with Orthodox priests at the opening of a statue commemorating the soon-to-be-sainted Ivan the terrible. They gave essentially the exact same speeches.

Cognitive dissonance encompasses greater contradictions than that.

Fuckin lmao at any Trump supporter whining about anyone calling for a recount when Trump himself was going on about rejecting the results before the election. Doubly funny with Trump just tweeting about how he only lost the popular vote because of "illegal votes."

Also, I hope there's a special place in hell for people who unironically parrot "SAD!" (and other Trumpisms)
