A lot of Japanese people I met thought that anyone of Japanese descent had a genetic predisposition to speaking Japanese and were dumbfounded as to why all the Japanese-Brazilians couldn't.

According to the IBGE, as of 2009 there were approximately 1.6 million people of Japanese descent in Brazil."

I had a student write about her dreams for a college application essay and she talked about how she'd always wanted to be a computer programmer or engineer, but her dad told her that girls can't do math and so stopped her from studying it and is forcing her to learn interior design instead. Also had a Korean friend who actually got her engineering degree but she was the only woman at the company and not allowed to do any engineering work, just make tea and stuff, so she eventually gave up and teaches English now.

Yeah you know the legit horrors of racism and sexism in the US and then you go other places and, drat. Like it's not even a positive about the US exactly, just that other places are so bad. Also people get into absolutes. The US has a ton of racism problems and also is one of the most racially tolerant nations in the world. These can both be true! Sexism though, the US is definitely behind Europe and some other places.

McGavin posted:They're called "Christmas Cakes" because nobody wants any after the 25th. The weird ones to me are the women that are 30+ that are already divorced, some with children, and who are immediately looking to get married again right this moment. They're so desperate for some reason, even though the market for divorced women is basically other divorced men (who usually don't want a divorced women either). I've turned down or been deleted by so many of these marriage hunters, and always in the most bizarre ways. It's usually like: Her: "Hi, my name is PURPLE CLOUD. I am 35. Are you married? What is your name? What is your age? What is your job??????" Me: "Name, age, marital status. Job." Her: "I am divorced. Is that ok?" Me: "No problem. Me too." Her: "Wow. I am looking for a husband." Her: *Sends 4 or 5 selfies to me* Her: "What do you think??" Me: "I am not looking to get married again right now." Her: "Oh..." Her: *Deletes me* I wonder what will happen if I say "Oh, dear, you look beautiful. I am also looking to get married right now too!" I had a woman delete me a few days ago after telling me she wanted a husband and she had asked if I was interested to marry her after sending a few selfies to me. She added me on Tantan and didn't speak English. I gave her a logical list of reasons why it's not good, like the fact we don't speak the same language, we haven't met yet, I don't know her name and she doesn't know mine, we have been talking for 30 minutes, etc., etc. She gave me reasons back like we can eventually learn to communicate, she can learn my name and about me, and as long as I am willing to stay in China then I am good man for her. It was mind-boggling to her that I didn't see her thinking about it as "that's all that's needed for marriage." I decided to make her delete me by insulting China in the best way possible. I said I can't eat Chinese food, I hate it and even if I loved her so much, I could never stand to eat her food or eat outside with her. It's not true, I eat Chinese food about 6 days per week for all meals, but she didn't know that. She got angry and said I should go find someone that can eat the same food as me and it must be unbearable to talk with someone who eats Chinese food, and then she deleted me. This happens every single week, usually more than once. It takes them about 10 minutes to bring up the marriage, and then think that's all I need to say yes or no and be 100% serious about it. I really should just say yes one day and see what happens, but I already have enough crazy people on there.

If Japan has such a labor shortage maybe they could try paying people more instead of paying them less and less every year for the past 10 years. Or maybe not make people stay at work for 12 hours a day until they kill themselves, shrinking the labor pool.

I'm not a bad dude I was like "no I'm really serious about settling down" but none of them believed it I didn't do anything! Soooo many women also believe that Chinese and non-Chinese are completely incompatible because of "cultural differences," and usually this has been pushed into their heads by family or friends. You know the huge amount of rumors here about foreigners. I've been turned down by normal, nice, good girls because they think it's too strange and impossible to be with a non-Chinese, and they never want to leave China or they are convinced they will be whisked to Waiguo-ville and never speak their language or eat their own food ever again. My ex-fiancee's parents were convinced they would never see her again if we got married because there's no way people can afford a flight to-and-from the USA more than once in a few decades. I turn them down, maybe make some jokes, but I have never met one face to face. The girls I have found to really like foreigners have always been in a relationship with one before, and it ended due to him moving or him trading up. Some guys later might get turned down by women that meet me, because they all come to me for FWB or personal desire, and then try to snag me and reel me in and are left disappointed and then blame me for sticking to the plan and not just immediately agreeing to their change of heart. Phlegmish posted:It's weird how you can be considered a perpetual devil laowai outsider in China and apparently still have no trouble on the dating or even marriage scene. Is it like a fetish or what My boss married her husband because both had good jobs and saved money, were single and past 30, and met each other's requirements for dietary and social concerns. She had her daughter at like 35, and her and her husband sleep in separate rooms and beds. This is pretty common here, because people want social security and welfare and this is the main way to get it. Now just imagine what that's like if the couple find out they are actually mildly attracted to each other (or her to him), and then it becomes a fast race to the marriage certificate department. One of my friends (normal friends, not the other kind) got married out of age-related freak-outs and then regretted it a week later and apparently if you don't send in the marriage certificate as well as don't live together for 6 months after marriage or something, it's automatically null. She's got a few months left on her countdown to being "single" again, and he's in Taiwan crying.

The pay a lot of lip service to the former with little result and the latter is politically impossible. Basically the number of old people in Japan is increasing, (they have a rather long life span). economic stagnation and a property bubble have led to young people not marrying or having enough children. Fun fact if you marry and have one child you've basically halfed the population because you haven't replaced both yourself and your spouse. Also since not everyone lives to reproduce its still gonna shrink if you have two children. To grow a population you need at least 3. Now ad in sexism and Xenophobiba and yeah your working population really shrinks. Now you think this is gonna be great for the worker right? Well no if the economy is stagnate, with inflaction, or worse you re having to support all the older people who are now retired on their pension your standard of living is gonna take a huge loving hit. Not to mention again the cost of having a child.
