Nixon did it during the Saturday Night Massacre-- Bork was the coward who'd step up and fire the Special Prosecutor, to give you some idea of the kind of man it takes to do this kind of stuff. Having the Secretary agree is no brake on a situation if the President wants something bad enough and is willing to drat the consequences.

Comey directly interfered with the election multiple times including his last-minute November Surprise bullshit with his letter to Congress. If that doesn't label him as a crazed partisan simply because he didn't indict Clinton when he knew the case would get tossed in a hurry then what would? Even his non-indictment announcement was tailored to be as negative and attack ad friendly as possible. Obama's legacy is going to be his idiocy in constantly reaching across the aisle to the party that has openly stated they hated and wanted to ruin him from the moment he won in 2008.

The law mandated he say nothing because of the impending election. He's not as stupid as some posters in this thread want to believe and he knew full well that he could wait a week before saying anything, if anything every had to be said. As we now can see, he never had any reason to say anything because the investigation he wrote about was the most absurd six degrees of kevin bacon bullshit possible but that didn't matter because lies spread much quicker than the truth and a last second hit like his letter is not something you can recover from in time. Comey did as much as he thought he could get away with to influence the election and it absolutely helped damage Clinton since millions of idiots will always see him as having been "above the fray" and so on.

I do think of the many reasons why Clinton lost, including poor messaging, poor strategy, lack of charisma, voter suppression, low voter turnout, etc., it's worth remembering that misogyny is probably a bigger one than expected.

I don't think that's the sole reason, but I do think it was the straw that broke the camel's back for some voters.

it doesnt label him as a crazed partisan because james comey is known for bucking political norms and asserting his independence. it is one of the reasons that obama nominated him. while comey was extremely careless in his handling of a very sensitive investigation, there is no evidence that he intentionally acted in an effort to influence the election in some way.

the election is lost. i would rather have comey, who is very flawed but demonstrates some reluctance to serve as a lapdog, than whoever trump would put in his place.

Some internal emails asked if they thought that'd be a vulnerability for him. It was never made public until disclosed by Russian intelligence.

Also they said some mean things about him, privately, after he refused to condemn a troupe of his supporters that overslept, tried to yell their way into getting extra caucus votes, and couldn't stop yelling "oval office" at a sitting female senator on her way out the door.
