I got into the habit of saying Gavin because it would drive the dudes on this other forum absolutely nuts because they were so deeply invested in the self-image of being serious military technology enthusiasts who read the good, smart amateur military analyst blogs rather than the bad, silly ones. Then I decided to just stop going there because it seemed like a waste of time and also I guess because they were all Nazis but y'know. Someone did not want to have to wait to be driven closer before being able to hit them with his sword. aphid_licker fucked around with this message at 16:47 on Nov 29, 2016 |

If alcohol never happens, like idk, our brain chemistry is slightly different and it does nothing for us, what would soldiers outside the places where weed or opium grows be getting hosed up on? It probably wouldn't be fly agaric, right?

I was reading about film Henry V, produced in Britain during WW2 and released in 1944, and I'm feeling a little bummed that they didn't do blooper reels back then because this would have been good:trivia posted:The filming of a battle scene was stopped in order for the company to watch while overhead a group of British fighters attacked a formation of German bombers on their way to bomb London. When the real battle passed out of sight, the movie battle resumed filming. Most of the battle scenes were therefore shot in Ireland so that a gathering of knights at Agincourt wouldn't draw the attention of Stuka pilots, but also because it was hard to find suitable extras in the UK. Another problem rose from material shortages, so chain mails were actually knitted gray wool and costumes were made from scraps of fabric. Despite of these measures it was the most expensive British movie ever. And again Winny has to micromanage everything! quote:The most significant cuts to the text - the ones which generally provoke criticism at Henry as a king - were reputedly made at Winston Churchill's request.

I still kind of maintain that a tank which flies is fairly well encapsulated by the Sheridan given that you can chuck it out the back of a flying C130, or airlift it with a helicopter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgg3iRaVnbw M113s are cool though, it's a literal crate full of infantry.

Dude who is going to berlin: Check out Hohenschönhausen museum. It's a building that was used by the NKVD as a prison after the war and then turned over to the Stasi. It's maintained as it was in the 80s and is loving mental. This is the place you ended up if a van labeled "fish delivery" black bagged you ooff the street. If you speak German they have tours by inmates. If not they have also good tours by English speaking grad students. Check online for times as there is a set schedule and you can't just walk around alone. Easily one of my top five Berlin things.

Displaying major chunks of ancient architecture is kind of the Pergamon's "thing" They've also got some beautiful intricately carved chunk of wall from somewhere in the middle east or africa or something. It's gorgeous, lots of arabic geometric carving. I'm sure it's famous and priceless, but I can't remembe it's name.

The retreat from the Yalu was pretty chaotic. Certainly elements of the army could be described as 'routed', but IIRC, the Marines did a credible job of holding the line to allow for a more orderly retreat. Still, casualties were pretty bad and there was a ton of lost equipment.
