They were supposed to dump the slag (waste from smelting) down a slope. Instead, a large quantity of very hot slag suddenly came in contact with water, which flashed to steam and caused a steam explosion. Have you ever added water to hot oil in the kitchen? It’s like that, but on a grand scale. e: I think Potential BFF is right and the pot fell right off the car. Platystemon fucked around with this message at 02:17 on Dec 1, 2016 |

Yea, those pots are meant to be gently tilted to keep a slow, controlled stream. I guess another possibility is that the slag solidified into a boulder with a molten center that fell out as a single mass and shattered when it hit the ground. Either way, bad.

What are the physical properties of slag like? It seems like you could make lovely bricks out of it or something.

San Juan Puerto Rico famously has streets paved with “blue” bricks. e: Apparently, they’re not from Puerto Rican furnaces. They’re from Spain. Chunks of slag were carried across the ocean as ballast. Platystemon posted:You can, in fact, make lovely bricks out of it. This makes me happy, it always seemed like a big waste of readily castable material. I guess it's like the old natural gas flares, where making the molds and distributing and selling the bricks just isn't quite worth in most cases.

The Protagonist posted:What are the physical properties of slag like? It seems like you could make lovely bricks out of it or something. Have you ever picked up a piece of pumice? It's kinda like that but heavier and more lumpy. Like foamy metallic glass, sort of. It clinks when you hit two pieces together but it feels scratchy if you rub them. You can find it sitting around anywhere there used to be (or currently is) heavy industry. I remember finding a lot of it along the railroad tracks as a kid, because it was one of the things used for track ballast. It pretty much is mostly glass, IIRC (silicon dioxide) and other metal oxides (which we usually think of as rocks or ceramics). Sagebrush fucked around with this message at 03:33 on Dec 1, 2016 |

Slag tends to contain a high concentration of heavy metals, which limits its appeal.

You can find a fair amount of slag in Pennsylvania around the old stone iron furnaces that are scattered across the state and mostly forgotten for 100-150+ years. Mostly green, glassy with bubbles in it. Good for...doorstops? Cooler to find the furnaces no one's found for a long time.

Wikipedia says that slag is commonly used in cement and concrete.
