Probably depends on their goals, but making them stop drinking soda is the biggest one I've seen when talking to friends about trying to get into shape.

In the US, that is.

No more soda, lift heavy things. Pretty straightforward.

Yeah, none of them drink soda, but they all eat like loving poo poo. I spent about 10 minutes talking about nutrition, and got them all to download and log their food on myfitnesspal.

Also, 2 of them are way too skinny, and one is chubby.

One of the skinny dudes runs for fitness right now, I was like "dude, you gotta cut that poo poo out with your chicken legs."

Hey all.

I have a couple friends with no lifting experience that are going to start lifting with me. It's been a while since I was a beginner, so any advice on resources for lifting/nutrition etc? Is "read starting strength" still the advice everyone starts off with? I have my old copy sitting on my shelf I can lend out.

gently caress starting strength. Try the beginner program you get here http://strengtheory.com/complete-strength-training-guide/

Not a direct quote. I actually said "if you want to build muscle, you should really try to keep cardio to a minimum. It's really hard to put on muscle when you do a lot of cardio. Look at most marathon runners."

Although personal attacks and insults would actually fly in my social circle, but I'm trying to build them up for success.

It aint that bad. Japan is a little more conservative. In 2011 I saw people covering tattooes because they are a sign of gang membership here but now people dont bother anymore, a lot of people and ever girls have tats in my city. You can get almost everything here, most ON products and I just found a site that ships quest bars here for cheap if I wanna diet. The big difference is gyms are both smaller and everything is cramped together. It aint like Aus or America where your gym is the size of an airplane hanger more like the size of a dentists office. But on the plus side some gyms are attached to a 찜질방 which is like a korean sauna so after leg day I can hop into a super hot jacuzzi style tub and chill for a few minutes while my quads mend in a submerged zero G stasis of 40°C water.
i went to a gym in Seoul and one in Busan and the Busan one was pretty large/western, but it was in a pretty fancy condominium complex near the beach - also super empty except for some old dudes running the treadmills. the one in Seoul was in a university and pretty hosed cramped and the only other dude I ever saw was a huge german named Pablo. no saunas in either, though. i feel ripped off now.

Because the "normal" reference range includes 99 year old men. Ask not what is normal, but what is optimal. Just jab a needle in yourself already.

You're right, maybe a deload would be better. I'm failing all my sets, and don't seem to have any energy. Then again, I haven't eaten any salami this week, just chicken :smith:

Deloading is for sad losers who can't think of anything to do other than the gym. Or people so insecure about their minimal gains they're terrified a week out will make people think they don't lift.

If you need a rest, have a real rest. Give it your all. Push that rest to the limit, and beyond.

If you push yourself hard enough, a deload week is cool and good when programmed in.

you can even use similar weights to what you are using now, just cut reps.
