One of the buildings down the street seems to cater to muscular black guys always dressed like they are going to the track (tank tops, running shoes, shorts with those leggings under them). Down the other street are tons of Africans and Pakistanis/Indians. It's just weird to see another white guy in my own building. The housing manager guy said there are many Koreans and Japanese staying in here going to the university, but until I saw the other white guy, apparently I was the only one in this building.

Background info: I'm Chinese, and my parents immigrated here before I was born. My parents uphold very traditional views. I have no doubt that my parents love me, but it is very visible that my brother is the 'golden child'. Even when we were young, my brother would bully me. My parents just chalked it up to my brother just playing, but my brother would kick, punch, slap me as he wanted. I still have a few scars from it. If I ever retaliated, my brother would hit me two times as hard, and my parents would tell me off. Whenever he'd do something wrong to me, my parents would just tell me to forgive him, since he is young and doesn't know any better. They have been saying that every single year, and he's 18 now. He should know better. I don't really have a relationship with my brother any more. I'm sick of always doing my best to take care of him, and ensure the best for him, and to have my brother not caring or acknowledging anything I do fror him. He's 18, in his first year of college. I'm 19 in my fourth year of college. My parents always favour him, and give him whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and demands me do the same for him. My parents always take my brother's side, no matter what. My brother is very lazy, spoiled and entitled due to his upbringing. An example would be when my brother and I started playing badminton. My parents enrolled us in class training. I fell in love with the sport, but my parents stopped putting me in the class since my father said "I have no future and no potential and just am a waste of money", while my brother (not any better than me) was being enrolled in private training, tournaments, etc. I know my parents are very generous and kind to me, as they pay for my tuition, but it seems unfair when my brother's tuition, rent, books, food are all being paid, along with $15k allowance they give him each year. I have worked my butt off since I was 15, and I have had 8 jobs already. My brother has never worked a single day in his life. My brother is in first year, and currently lives in a luxury apartment to his own all paid for by my parents, while I share a room with another person in a run down home. There are many more instances. I know I am very lucky to be in my position compared to many others, and I don't want to seem like an entitled brat. However due to how my parents' have raised my brother and I, I have built up a lot of resentment. I've always been treated as less than him. I confronted my parents about it. They didn't see anything wrong, and told me that he is my younger brother, and since I am oldest, I should be doing everything for my family. I'm sick of this. I don't resent my brother, since I know it is not his fault he is this way, but I don't love him either. I am living away for university, and return home for holidays and summer break. I have a good job ($80k) and money saved. Should I just move out and go low contact? I still feel attachment to my family, since they are the ones who raised me, and I still love them. But I can't stand being treated lesser than my brother because I am older/a female. It's also very clear that they love him more than me. I still feel very hurt about it. Ever since I was young, I would do anything I could to gain my parents' attention and love, but anything I did was never enough. I'm 19, graduating a 4 year college and have an $80k job. My parents don't care, and think that my brother getting a 60-70 in his first year classes deserves a celebration. I want them to apologize to me, and acknowledge the way that they have treated me compared to my brother is wrong, and a very outdated concept. I don't know if they will ever truly acknowledge it, but I don't know how I can stand being in this family, being treated like that. tl;dr: 19F, Chinese. Resent my parents for the way they treated me compared to my brother, "the golden child". Should I go low contact and hope for them to acknowledge their wrongdoing?

LOL at the shocking twist at the end where she reveals she is a she. The whole time I was confused about why they would entitle the younger brother instead of the older one. Still a little confused how she's in her 4th year of university at 19 and also making $80k a year at the same time, but ehhh.quote:I know my parents are very generous and kind to me, as they pay for my tuition, She can marry or date outside her ethnicity and find some better way to view life, or make it on her own and do the same, but something tells me at this age she's really wanting their approval which will never come. My (obviously Chinese) ex-GF was just like that with her dad and she had wanted to abandon her family completely except that one time her dad told her he was proud of her when she graduated university, which set up a lifetime of her also hoping she could get his approval at least once more. I imagine the writer of that story might go full-retard and try to cling to her Chinese community or go to China to help ingratiate herself to her parents, no matter how bad she feels about it. She might even look for a Chinese husband later to help with that cause. LMAO.

Good news! Thirty million Chinese girls just turned up. http://wapo.st/2gzvOcz Academics often talk about between 30 and 60 million “missing girls” in China, apparently killed in the womb or just after birth, thanks to a combination of preference for sons and the country’s decades under a repressive one-child policy. Now researchers in the United States and China think they might have found many — or even most — of them, and argue they might not have been killed after all. John Kennedy of the University of Kansas and Shi Yaojiang of Shaanxi Normal University have released a study claiming that the births of many of the girls may, in fact, simply not have been registered. “People think 30 million girls are missing from the population. That's the population of California, and they think they're just gone,” said Kennedy, an associate professor of political science, according to the university website. “Most people are using a demographic explanation to say that abortion or infanticide are the reasons they don't show up in the census and that they don't exist. But we find there is a political explanation.” Local officials, they argue, were complicit in the concealment to retain support from villagers, and maintain social stability. “There is no coordination between cadres saying 'we're all in agreement,'” Kennedy said. “Actually it's just very local. The people who are implementing these policies work for the government in a sense. They are officials, but they are also villagers, and they have to live in the village where they are implementing policies.” China finally abandoned the one-child policy this year after more than three decades, allowing everyone to have two children. But there is still widespread concern about the lagged effects of a seriously skewed gender ratio on society, with young males said to vastly outnumber women. These findings could also allay some of these concerns. “If 30 million women are truly missing, then there's going to be more males than females of marriageable age as they start looking for wives,” Kennedy said. “There is nothing more socially unstable than a bunch of testosterone with nowhere to go.” The pair apparently stumbled on their theory when interviewing a villager in China’s northern Shaanxi province in 1996. The man had two daughters and a son and referred to the younger daughter as “the nonexistent one.” Since the mid-1980s, villagers could legally have a second child if the firstborn was a girl. After more interviews showed the practice to be widespread, the researchers then compared the number of the number of children born in 1990 with the number of 20-year-old Chinese men and women in 2010. They discovered 4 million additional people, and of those there were approximately 1 million more women than men. “If we go over a course of 25 years, it's possible there are about 25 million women in the statistics that weren't there at birth,” Kennedy said. The 2010 Chinese census found the sex ratio at birth was 118 males for every 100 females. Globally the average is about 105 males for every 100 females. Kennedy said the findings also question the idea that Chinese villagers were willing to kill their daughters on a massive scale. But even if the report might be seen as positive for China, Kennedy said it was until recently too politically sensitive to publish, especially for his Chinese co-researcher. The findings are published this month in the journal China Quarterly.

This is one of those questions that drives me up the wall because it's stupid as hell and whatever answer I give won't make any difference, unless I simply call them an idiot and then they get butthurt. Even asking them like "Why don't YOU have blue eyes and blonde hair?" is met with "I am Chinese and you are American." Most amusing thing during my Study abroad was how two of the guys in out six man group were basically the center of attention for all of the Chinese girls. The most popular one was since he was blonde, blue eyed, youngish looking, and for lack of a better word, a pretty boy. He was, for what it's worth, the Whitest person in our group as he talked about skiing (despite all of us coming from Florida), barely ate any of the local food and largely ate granola bars in his room, and other stuff. The other guy was popular because he had a bare resemblance to Adam Levine and the girls that crowded around him were all musicians or music fans. For reference, since I looked Chinese, I received the least amount of attention by way of literally looking like some rando standing next to a bunch of white people and their old Chinese professor (a professor that is Chinese). I also took a video of a dance group that performed for us that literally gave the blonde one a stare down as they danced in a weird sort of seduction.
