lol we're gonna bail out the insurance industry after obamacare is repealed

http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/308403-gop-in-talks-about-helping-insurers-after-obamacare-repeal

quote:

Congressional Republicans are talking to health insurers about ways to prevent a collapse of the insurance market once they pass an ObamaCare repeal bill.

Republicans are planning to pass repeal legislation as soon as January but plan to delay it from taking effect for a few years to avoid immediate disruption in people’s coverage. The delay would also buy them time to come up with a replacement.

But industry officials and healthcare experts are warning that insurers might bail out of the system altogether once a repeal bill passes, particularly since many of them have been losing millions of dollars on ObamaCare plans.
An exodus of insurers could dramatically limit the coverage options for the roughly 10 million people enrolled in the system, potentially creating a backlash.

Recognizing the problem, Republican congressional staffers are in talks with insurers about policies they could implement to help improve their financial situation in that interim period and prevent a breakdown in the market, according to three Republican lobbyists.

The sources say that the talks are in the early stages and that no specific policies have been decided on.

Any policies favorable to insurers could be politically treacherous for Republicans, given that they have railed for years against ObamaCare “bailouts” of insurance companies. It is also unclear if any policy changes would be enough to convince insurers to stay.

It is also possible that no provisions for insurers will end up being included in the repeal bill, making the political messaging simpler. Republicans could instead look to regulatory changes that the Trump administration could make that are favorable to insurers.

One Republican lobbyist said that in discussions about a plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a replacement, insurers are “painting a picture of the market that isn't very pretty and Republican staffers are getting the picture.”

“They want to pump money back in to the insurers without appearing like they’re giving them a handout or bailing them out,” the lobbyist added.

So when it goes on about "particularly since many of them have been losing millions of dollars on ObamaCare plans" what is the ACTUAL underlying cause of that loss of money?

Is it red states denying the medicaid expansion out of spite? That'd be my first guess.

probably because the people signing up for obamacare are mostly middle aged and older who don't yet qualify for medicare and have tons of medical issues

the plan was to get younger healthy people to sign up in order to offset that, but welp the only jobs youngins can get that don't already provide insurance don't pay enough for them to afford lovely aca plans. but yeah on top of that if they're in a state that refused medicaid expansion that's tough titty all around

Plus young healthy people just don't see a benefit in shelling out >$300 per month for high deductible health insurance that they never use. There was a survey recently stating that 93%(!) of millennials don't even bother scheduling preventative doctor visits. If that's the case why even bother, just cross your fingers and take the penalty.

Why would you sign up for healthcare if you were a young person who is healthy it's another cost in addition to your student loans.

We also had the yearly works council event for the employees and there were two depressive take-aways.

1. There was a time where you got 4% guaranteed returns for work pensions.

2. The applicable union does not want our sector so we now have to make our own union. Which will likely fail.

there's a tax penalty if you dont have insurance but if you're already that broke you get a refund at tax time anyway so the penalty is just taken out of your refund and doesn't mean much

if people who make this little even bother doing taxes. i mean people who roll the dice on health insurance probably don't care about their taxes that much either

So it might not end in a hung jury. There's still a chance the other jurors kick out the black guy

Yeah

so on the surface it doesn't make much sense for young healthy people to sign up for lovely high deductible health insurance that can cost as much as a car payment per month when they usually don't see a doctor for years anyway

of course eventually some young guy who rolls the dice like that will end up in a car wreck or have appendicitis or some poo poo through no fault of their own and they're financially hosed

single payer/Medicare for all would fix this but nooooo that hurts insurance companies and then "those people" get healthcare too so that isn't happening
