I'm not sure the Chinese quite know what to do, I'm sure they weren't expecting this. A trade war would wouldn't help them any more than it would us and the PRC's legitimacy is bound up in the teetering economy - but what if a clear enemy were to emerge?

Who said it? "China won't do poo poo about the US. They won't start a trade war and they won't do anything with their military. They need us more than we need them economically." Was it, Uncle Marty at Thanksgiving, or goons in the China megathread?

China isn't going to do poo poo militarily because Trump and Mattis are absolutely willing to escalate with them. Trump is the guy who asked multiple times in the same meeting why we can't use nukes if we have them, you can't assume he's a rational actor. As for a trade war, we aren't as diversified into China as most places. We can absolutely burn them to the ground and have it be a really, really bad year for us. For them, it'd be the end of their entire social order. Dumbshits shouldn't have spent decades breeding the most whiny and entitled capitalists the world had ever seen if they didn't know how to make an economy work.

It's been 20 years since the Straight crisis so many people may have forgotten that China will put their money where their mouth is on this issue.

I mean I suppose it's possible that China is spiteful enough to murder the world if they can't be a superpower, but they'd pretty much have to. There's nothing short of that they can really do here. Trump is a narcissist, Trump will never deescalate unless he has an excuse. Geopolitical conflicts like this don't give the sort of excuses he's comfortable using. Like he can say he "Never settles cases" and then settle his university lawsuit because he's too busy BEING THE NEXT PRESIDENT, but there's really no up power position from a conflict with China. It'd have to be like "Well I was going to push back against the Chinese, but I was too busy BUILDING OUR MOON BASE AND ENACTING THE AMERICAN SPACE EMPIRE!", and as crazy as he is I don't see him funding NASA. No President is that crazy.

What you say is true but risks are associated with probabilities and creating the conditions for higher risks is not a good idea. Mike Pence is massively incompetent as a leader too. The best you can say is he's a massively incompetent politician, so at least he vaguely understands the rules of the game. And then shortly after saying that you'd watch him rounding people up to put into camps so they can have the human being beaten out of them.
