Um. Him being somewhat mentally ill has been hinted at in the series the whole time, and there's plenty of mental illness that doesn't preclude people reaching valid conclusions.

But if I'm meant to think that now he's a delusional schizophrenic that cannot distinguish his fantasies from what's really happening then it's not as enjoyable to watch the show any more.

Because being super specific suddenly makes the sentence a lot more useful and somehow very different.

I can get behind this.

The secret sauce of the X-Files is that we never really know if Mulder is crazy, or being manipulated, or right. Because the show never (past tense) had to answer that question Mulder could be brilliant or nuts. That's what gave his occasional good cop instincts some gravitas; when he can nail a serial killer with an instant profile or pick up on some piece of evidence that somebody else might miss it makes it seem like maybe this guy isn't so crazy after all.

When you divorce 'the truth' from Mulder's ramblings - usually by telling us, the audience, what the truth really is - it makes Mulder look insane. Even when the answers aren't clear, when Mulder goes off on a wild tangent without any evidence or any way for the audience to follow along with him, he looks nuts. That's why his chem trail level ramblings sound disjointed and it's why Fox "Hey lets do some mushrooms for no reason" Mulder looks kinda dumb.

In the past he'd say something totally off the wall, then you'd find it was true, then you'd find out what makes it true. It makes him seem strange but you're always there with him and following his line of reasoning. You're laughing with Mulder at the absurdity of the world.

In the new series he says out of nowhere "These magic mushrooms can let me see into the mind of a man in a coma". And yes it works, but at no point are we shown why he thinks this or even why it works. It just does.

Yeah I didn't like the chemtrail rants either, I thought they were awful.

In the new episodes I liked the Mutant Siblings one and the Were-Man. I thought Mulder's mushroom trip was funny and enjoyable in an otherwise not so great episode.

The wrap up at the very end of the final episode was terrible IMO.

The raspiness of Mulder's voice is what kind of bugged me more than any aspect of the actors' physical appearances or aging.

I thought Skinner actually held up the best out of the old regulars.

This was the part that took me out of the story the most. Mulder has been party to special, possibly magic ceremonies involving shaman and comatose patients. I sincerely doubt Original Flavor Mulder would ever be so egotistical to think he could be a medicine man just by downing a fistfull of mushrooms. It's just terribly out of character.

I agree, but the show didn't do that and I'm not sure why people keep acting like they did. Tad's character was the extreme conspiracy nut. His chemtrails rant wasn't meant to be taken at face value. Unless I missed something Mulder never bought into anything about chemtrails. The point was there were grains of truth in Tad's beliefs and discoveries, and Mulder believed those due to what he saw in the hangar. But Tad was piggybacking every piece of silly Truther bullshit he could on top of what was actually happening. Think about how blowhards like O'Reilly or Limbaugh make those huge leaps about Muslims and Obama and Liberals, and don't let people get a word in edgewise - this is the opposite end of the political spectrum but the same type of pundit. Tad wasn't meant to be taken seriously, and was just an extreme and proselytizing version of Mulder. Not even Mulder took him at 100%. But usually there's some sort of catalyst that gets Mulder on board with forming his own theory, and that was Tad's purpose.

I'm not saying that Mulder himself believed in Chemtrails just that before his theories made sense. As I said - look at what he did with the mushrooms as a good example of this.

I unno that whole rant at the 3/4 mark of the episode sounded an awful lot like they were trying to quickly explain how this thing spread so fast. Tad might be a paranoid nut but in the absence of other explanations it sounded like exposition. But yeah to your point it wasn't Mulder directly.

My folks went to Caprica and all I got was this frakking avatar.
My fiance and I are slowly progressing through our rewatch, we're now nearing the end of season 2. Inconveniences like jobs and life have prevented us from binge watching.

My thoughts so far are that the mytharc really started getting fun with Duane Berry, and GODDAMN there are some good stand-alone episodes. Just finished Die Hand Die Verletzt. Creepy as gently caress, as was the one right before it, Irresistible.

This rewatch is definitely reminding me that while season 10 had it's moments (Were-man for the win!), it was mostly a pale shadow of the show's former glory.

Alternately, to play devil's advocate to my own point, X-Files exists in a world where literally every urban legend and global conspiracy is true including UFO abductions/government coverups based on real world conspiracy theories dating back to the 1940s, so in theory Truther and chemtrails stuff could feasibly exist in the show without the implication that they're true in real life.

They perfect the formula of "two strong personalities facing weird challenges and finding silly and creepy things" into a beautiful art, but most episodes follow the same beats. Season 2 is great and weird and 3 is probably the peak.

Who isn't afraid of being burned alive? I mean, I understand if the guy cant get close to campfires or doesn't like cigarettes being lit near him, but his phobia seems to be limited to life threatening blazes. Again I ask, who doesn't have a healthy fear of fire when they are literally surrounded by fire and consequently in danger of being burned alive?
