What the gently caress was Starfleet thinking sending Dax back to DS9? Don't you think that would gently caress with people's emotional trauma a little? Like 'my friend died and I'm trying to get over that but she's not -really- dead but sorta is and this new person remembers the times I creeped on her previous host' c'mon man.

Which was even worse for Worf, as the show pointed out. How could he believe his wife was in the afterlife when she was walking around the station in a teenage boy's body? Putting Ezri on the station didn't make sense either from an in-universe perspective or from a story-telling one. I think they should have had Ezri leave with her ship again, maybe have an episode part way through the series where she visits the station once people have had time to grieve and move on a little. Could still have done the storyline of Worf's religion being at odds with the reality of the Trill, with Sisko helping him through it as he's been close to a Dax that died before.

Of course, Ezri was still a better character than anyone on Voyager outside the Doctor.

Obviously it's because they made him use a dinky little Feddie phaser and not one of those Klingon Buntline things.

Also, knives don't have stun settings, so he was kinda out of his element.

And there you sat, eating hamburgers while the world cried.
I feel like I'd enjoy TNG more if Worf were a loud boisterous murder Klingon like Martok instead of an understated simmering with impatience and frustration Klingon. I know they're a disciplined enlightened crew but TNG kind of reminds me of sitting in a waiting room. Like there should be a little table on the bridge that has a bunch of magazines on it. It's like life in space is their day job instead of their passion.[/2cents]

A lot of conversations in TNG come off as a run through of pros and cons bullet points for the matter at hand and no one is passionate about anything unless they're being psychically controlled or something.

I'm not sure Martok quite fell into the loud murder klingon camp. He seemed to get along well with pretty much anyone and just liked to get his drink on.

Dude had two human parents, a human upbringing, in a human society.
But with a Klingon temperament.
He is perfectly cast as the simmering frustrated conflicted one.
Every moment he wants to just lash out but knows he can't.
It would be strange if he was Martok like.

Kirk got the penal colony because he was human and the two races were still very much at war. The Klingons were being polite with the upcoming Accords and could easily have just had Kirk executed. Worf got away with his poo poo because he was a Klingon and did it the Klingon way - by challenging them and beating their poo poo in in a legitimised challenge of combat.

Being in space actually is their day job though. You'd think that for every day they encounter a space amoeba that mind rapes Counselor Troi there'd have been hundreds where nothing loving happened

I've been rewatching most of DS9 and its even better the second time going through those early seasons knowing the pay off. Dukat does indeed own, such a perfect rear end in a top hat. I had read since watching it the first time that the studio or producers or whatever really, really wanted to kill bashir because everyone hated him, so it was kinda neat to watch his story with that kind of pressure in the background. I always thought Julian was a smug prick, but charming in that way.

I also read that they wanted to make old lady Troi a more frequent character and all I have to say is thank loving christ that didn't work out.

One of the reasons Dukat got cartoony evil was because of the studio. They were really upset that people were sympathizing and liking Dukat and were mad at the writers humanizing him and making him charismatic. He's an evil nazi and needs to be evil all the time. You can't possibly show the dangers of an evil but charismatic leader.

Yeah it was a little over the top when he cucked that cult member and impregnated his wife then lied about the baby being a miracle to explain why it was part cardassian, then tried to throw her out of an airlock before trying to poison all of his followers so he didn't have to deal with them anymore.

And the cherry on top is when dukat is blustering and garak is telling him it wont work.

Garak then goes go to basically call Dukat out for trying to impress kira, and brings up that "he is a married man"

Dukat's reaction shows its all real.

Studios are like toddlers who must constantly be saved from killing themselves. Earlier in the series they were going to have Kira eventually fall for Dukat, until Nana Visitor is like "If you have the holocaust survivor fall in love with the slimy nazi camp commander, I will walk out on this show" so they didn't do it.

Dangerous too. A bad guy who is also super friendly and charming. The studio apparently didn't realize that the world's most infamous dictators and war criminals tend to not be really obvious psychopaths literally all the time. Something something Hitler was nice to his secretaries, loved his dog, and was a vegetarian
