Zane posted:in star trek it was a uniform analogy at least which everyone could 'get' as part of a broader theme. the asari are extra funny because there had to be a conversation at bioware at some point where they collectively said "hmm, yeah, we'll use this setting to think post-anthropocentrica-- uhh, I guess they're lesbian space elves??" Paramount generally put more thought into it, whenever they could get away from Gene Roddenberry. The Klingons were the Soviet Union, the Vulans were the British Empire/UK, the Romulans were China, the Ferengi were the logical conclusion of the United States, and so on and so forth. It let you tell stories like The Undiscovered Country, which was the Berlin Wall coming down in space. Bioware does not take that approach.

Please add in a twist where the Asari are actually these little crustacean-y things who have been using biological encounter suits to make it easier to interact with other species. Each 'Asari' is a colony of several hundred shrimpthings piloting the body like a spaceship. Nobody has told the humans yet because they know they're sensitive about things like that.

Speaking of Asari, do we know yet what they really look like in the face? As in, what they look like to each other?

What you see is what you get. They actually do look like that. It's just that each species focuses on the parts that matter most to them. So they've got human snouts, salarian torsos, turian crests, hanar pigmentation, volus bank accounts, krogan headbutting abilities, etc.

Zane posted:The way bioware chases progressive gender nonconformity in their romances while simultaneously failing with their setting to think even vaguely about how different aliens species might not comport with conventional human standards of masculinity and femininity is hilarious to me and very revealing. What does it reveal? When it comes to loving people ("character development") they can think a little outside the box. When it comes to writing a creative sci-fi setting around interesting ideas (in which those characters exist) on the other hand??? they can only think of a tribute to the action-adventure films of the 1970s and 80s within the template of the same fantasy plot they've always written. Bioware bangs the 'we're progressive' drum as hard as they can and yet barely do anything that could be considered controversial. The closest they get, I guess, is Krem. You'd think they could make Iron Bull a woman or something. Wouldn't that have been a twist.

The idea is just bad. Let's be honest, Asari don't look anything like Salarians. The Turian fringe comment has some merit but just look at an Asari's facial features compared to a Turian.

Asari's are just sorta a boring idea of a race. They're pretty lame. But the boring races are probably the ones the writer's are most confident players won't reject for being too alien or strange. Which is why we're never getting an Elcor or Hanar party member.

Its saving grace is that its nonsense is of the feel-good, comfort food variety.

Citadel was fun but it was exceptionally stupid and out of place and frankly anything short of pure AiDS that was released after the ME3 debacle was going to be well received even if it was exceptionally stupid. If they had sealed up ME3 in a halfway competent way and then released citadel it still would have still been stupid but it would have been a silly romp, instead it's a sign of the tumblrification of bioware at the expense of good game making.

What was the phrase that was tossed around a bunch during the initial ending kerfluffle? Narrative coherence, right? It's the idea that if your narrative is coherent you'll get the player to suspend her belief and ignore minor inconsistencies and subsume herself in the world. Well, there's nothing coherent about having a loving house party in Captain Anderson's citadel gently caress-pad while the reapers are turning everyone on earth into jelly. So for many people it's nearly impossible to ignore this and really get into the content.

Its saving grace is that its nonsense is of the feel-good, comfort food variety. Citadel is not meant to take place during the main story. I'm pretty sure that either during ME2 or ME3, Bioware said that DLC could not take place after the main quest due to publisher mandate. It's the same as Arrival in ME2. Remember, you could do Arrival at any point post Horizon despite the fact it would make zero sense to transpire then. Well, hope this helps.

However the moment that it showed Ryder scanning and trailer voiceover guy saying "IT WILL BE CRITICAL FOR YOUR SUCCESS" aw come on. Also, the disarm interrupt was lmao
