Jimmy Little Balls posted:Everyone here does drive really slowly though. Pulling out onto a major road? Do it at 5mph right in the path of an oncoming vehicle. Need to turn left? Just drive at walking speed in the middle lane and then cut across the front of someone as late as possible without looking, bonus points for slamming on your brakes for no reason. But yeah, I don't think I've ever seen anyone going faster than about 40mph in the city, even on the highways 60mph is about the max. I've seen surprisingly few accidents here, and never any serious ones. I loving hate the drivers here and I can't believe there are so many that can be so drat bad at it. They are only list, along with the old people. Something that bothers me a lot are the taxis and Ubers that stop right at the cross walk and block every person trying to cross. It's so god drat selfish and stupid. They always do it (at least here) and then 40 people have to divide and go around, sometimes while the car is still trying to pull away or forward and being more obnoxious. Today while crossing, myself and like 5 other people were cut off by this tactic and the dipshit passenger flung the door open on the people standing there, hitting one person and getting me in the hand. It was all so fast I didn't realize it was happening, but still, selfish idiots with cars or in cars are the epitome of Chinese culture.

I'm sure as long as it isn't about drugs they won't bother but you know wechat stores chatlogs and deleting what you write won't help at all if police actually ask the company for chat logs. Especially if it isn't a recall since delete only deletes what you wrote on your own phone. But seriously even with all the foreigner hate they'd probably just chastise whoever says Haier raped them for admitting to sexing up a foreign devil.

She also said she had a boyfriend, so I was against meeting her, but when she told me about him I realized he's just keeping her as a booty call for when he comes here 2-3 times per year for a day at a time for business. She said she has no idea what he does in his home province, but she knows a younger guy with money in China doesn't stick to one girl. Add all this up, and I feel like she would just be bringing shame to herself if she made a mess out of all of this, since her parents would scold her, they might know about her BF and scold her again for meeting another guy, and I am sure it would make its way back to her job or friends. Playing the victim only goes so far in this culture. She met me and knows I am not rich in the sense that she would think of rich, since she obviously comes from a lot of money. I think nothing will happen, but I did worry that first night. She honestly just seems like a horny girl and I doubt I was the only one she was talking to. She may have moved on to the next guy already, and living with her parents at her age says a lot and she probably doesn't want to disappoint them too much if she reveals her actions. At least that's what i am telling myself right now.

Talking about Chinese prison reminded me about the episode of TAL where they interview an American who got into some kind of tussle with a Chinese guy and, because he is a foreigner, the cops blame him for it. He gets stuck in jail for months without seeing a judge or being charged with anything. He keeps trying to get it resolved through the legal system but that doesn't work because they just want bribes and he won't pay. Eventually they let him go with no charges for some reason. They have a poetry competition in the jail and he wins. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/448/adventure

Traffic, oh god. I've nearly gotten into fights with drivers because I can't stop loving with them while crossing the street. As a whitey they seem to respect this law, I've seen multiple stories where the guy was released without charges and it's always the same where they hold the maximum time and then have to let him go. They won't bring it to trial unless it's guaranteed since they have the whole Asian 99%+ conviction rate thing.

Deceitful Penguin posted:im the lady and trump is teh man <Ugh! every loving Chinese period show that doesn't involve the Civil War/WWII> My father in law was blown away by the sword fight at the end of Rob Roy, and we watched it two times in a row so he could see it again. Everything in mainstream Chinese cinema/tv is so fake and flowery that a dose of realism is really jarring when they are exposed to it. He also (by the time he left after a year) was leaning more towards the acting and editing of western shows, as the more he watched them, the more cartoonish/childish Chinese tv/movies were starting to appear to him. He also got a kick out of Band of Brothers and was a little squeamish when watching parts of "The Pacific" (realistic blood an gore instead of horrible CGI blood). While he loves to watch war movies, he was surprised to see things like people breaking down in Saving Private Ryan/Das Boot/Der Untergang. He watched "Flags of our Fathers" and said that they would never portray Chinese heroes like that (human and flawed) because they were taught all the Chinese heroes were "perfect". He also watched "Letters from Iwo Jima" and at the end remarked that it was sort of sad for the Japanese soldiers, since they had been abandoned and had no chance. He asked if the CGI task force that showed up in the movie was in any way realistic, and if it was just depicted as that many ships to look impressive and I showed him this picture of task force 58 and told him that there were ~450 ships involved in the landings at Iwo Jima. He had to go outside for a smoke, then came back and had my wife translate for us so we could have a more in-depth discussion about the US role in the War in the Pacific (much to my wife's chagrin). He still believes that Mao dealt a massive blow to the Japanese, but after seeing the documentary "WWII in colour", and watching all that footage of Japanese ships/planes being destroyed and the bombing of the Home Islands, he realized that the US was the real force in defeating them, despite the massive amounts of indoctrination his generation received regarding the subject.

Put the umbrella in front of you before crossing the street, about the height of the drivers head. Usually they'll stop, and if not they'll hit the umbrella (which is soft and won't damage the car or windshield) then get out and shout.

China did play a huge role in Japan's defeat because that's where the vast majority of their huge army was stationed throughout the war, meaning they couldn't use them to protect all those islands that were hard enough for the US to take as it was.

If the Japanese army and Japanese marines were stationed in the same island they'd probably kill each other more than the Americans. Assuming they don't starve from the army and navy trying to sabotage each other.

There's a case to be made that even without US intervention, the Chinese would have eventually driven the Japanese out anyway, the Japanese situation especially logistically was not sustainable. We also really don't acknowledge what happened in China nearly as much as we should in the west. Mao himself had poo poo all to do with it though. The Korean stance frustrates me more. "If it weren't for An Jung-geun, I'd be speaking in Japanese to you now!"

the first B-29 raids on Japan were flown out from the vicinity of Chengdu in mid-1944 Mao was anxious to get US recognition and gave every assistance to Curtis LeMay, who later recalled that Mao offered to build as many airfields as LeMay wanted in Commie-held territory, but LeMay had to turn him down because they could barely keep the Chengdu bases supplied because everything had to be flown over the Himalayas from India

Manchuria wasn't just a series of puppets, there was an occupation force and sizeable Japanese immigration. You'd have to ask in the milhist thread for an answer from people that know more about it, but from my understanding the Japanese were already straining past their limits with what they held at the time the Americans intervened, let alone being able to take any more than that. If there hadn't been a war in the Pacific then the cost in life would obviously have been absolutely horrific, even more than it already was. But there was never gonna be a wholly Japanese China.

Well What Now posted:the first B-29 raids on Japan were flown out from the vicinity of Chengdu in mid-1944 Yeah there was a huge slapfight between Chiang and Stilwell over whether the limited logistical throughput was going to go to support Air Force operations in China or to the front in Burma. They eventually got a road and pipeline built just in time for the war to end. Still, its existence suggests that even if the Japanese had somehow done much better in the Pacific their hold on China could still be insecure. (To say nothing of the USSR looming in the background. Japanese strategy was an incredible string of doubling down on a losing hand.)

They were able to hit hard and take territory even late in the war in the Ichi Go offensive, but yeah they couldn't afford to hold it. You look at maps in textbooks of the territory they controlled and it's pretty impressive at first glance. But if you upped the resolution it would transform into a thin spiderweb of strategic cities and the roads between them with huge areas left ungarrisoned. The long term solution would be a puppet government under Wang Jingwei or some such, but the short term solution was "kill all, loot all, burn all" which kind of undermined the hearts and minds approach.
