A mechanics shop a few blocks from my house collapsed back in September 2015 because the excavation site next door piled up tons and tons and tons of soil against their outer wall:

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/staff-flee-as-brunswick-mechanic-workshop-partly-collapses-20150929-gjxc39.html

.... and it still hasn't been repaired because they found asbestos on the site. They cleared out the soil and installed huge metal braces to stop the rest of the building collapsing but it stayed like that for over a year. I think I saw that a little bit of work had been done when I went past there about a month ago.

Oh and of course the site being excavated next door has been sitting idle the entire time as well. I'm sure everyone involved is reeeeal happy with those excavation guys. :v:

That's not even the first building we've had collapse because of excavation work next door, there was a doctor's surgery that fell down a few years ago because the people demolishing the building next door didn't brace the adjoining wall. It happened during business hours and the nurse had to evacuate all the patients when she noticed the wall was starting to crumble.

Hey so the scissor lift which is never maintained and won't recharge is stuck and we can't move it. Oh? You say theres a brake release bolt on the brake actuator? Someone loctited it to hell and back?

Cue forklift and blank stares from everyone gathered around. Also, it worked...For about ten feet. Then the plastic dolly wheels exploded. I couldn't take another picture because I had to leave before they started pushing it.

That loving video gave me motion sickness. . . they cant orient the phone right, or steady, and the blurry side bars combined with auto stabilization just makes for full on :catdrugs: I honestly wish that cell phones would force landscape when recording video regardless of the orientation chosen by the idiot holding the phone.

What are the odds of the fire retardant foam being toxic? Do they usually use something like just a regular soap or is loaded with nasty chemicals?

Yes, the forklift couldn't do much except raise the end of the forklift enough to place the dollies. Then they lowered it on the dollies and according to a buddy of mine, they used the forklift to push/slide the thing with four dudes on the sides attempting to keep it from rolling to the left or right. Then the dollies on the front wheels disintegrated and people ran in all directions because no one want to lose a foot to an idiot's dumb idea to move a 6,000 LB piece of heavy machinery with furniture movers tools.

I do fire safety stuff for a living and it just makes me enraged when building owners don't take it seriously. So many lovely clubs and restaurants and art spaces that will just pile flammable junk over all the alternate exits too they get all bent out of shape when we tell them not to. To them it's just mindless bureaucratic rules hurting their business/space/artistic vision. Mass fire deaths only happen in the 3rd world, why do we need to follow any of this fire safety stuff anymore??? But my special art showing is only this weekend why can't I have double my occupancy load and block off the 2nd stairwell to make sure no one's sneaking drinks in?! We're drowning in regulations!!!

Sup fire safety bud! I had a guy throw a mini tantrum when I informed him that he shouldn't place a bookshelf in front of the only rear egress in his book store. I don't even have the authority to make him move it, I just gave him a heads up. He lost his poo poo because of "store layout" and "that's the only place it's going to work and he can just push the fuckoff huge shelf over in a fire. Thankfully the city inspector came in they do have the authority to make him move it.

I actually personally called the inspectors on a building I was working in once, even if it meant losing the contract. Ancient apartment with a huge central staircase, the fire doors on every floor were jammed open and did not release and shut during testing. Every single person in that building decided one year the best way to lay out their kitchen was to move the fridge in front of their rear egress door (which was in the kitchen). Granted, it did wonders for the kitchen layout...but man, I think out of like 30 units 2 had the egress accessible. The rear external fire escape had toilets all over it and no one had bothered to clear the snow off of it at any point in the winter. When we arrived the fire system was disabled because of a faulty pull station. It was terrifying.

EDIT: They tried to kill me with a FORKLIFT!

The first sign that the owner at a small company I used to work for was fading into dementia was the time he bought a forklift with no motor and a locked differential and had it delivered onto the only path from our assembly shop to the loading dock.

After a week or so I figured out how to move it by myself with a floor jack, two pallet trucks and a stack of 2x4s. It's me. The OSHA is coming from inside the thread.

It the same effect when it rains, people just don't bother adjusting to the conditions so they crash more often. Eventually they do but not before how many days or whatever until they get the message.

People are dumb and are not very good at evaluating risks.
