SeANMcBAY posted:ED 2013 was a fine modern horror movie but it would have been better if it wasn't an ED remake, if that makes sense. Yeah. If it had just had another name then it would have just been a good horror that kind of vaguely ripped off Evil Dead's premise but took it in a way more straight direction. It wouldn't have the burden of being compared to Ash, The Evil, or Deadites. Of course it also wouldn't have carried the attention of being an Evil Dead remake and might have just been lost in the mess of generic horrors.

Referencing back to the future 2 was probably my favorite reference in this episide, tbh. Nerdy reference AND explain time travel risks in one efficient dialogue.

One of my favorite things about the Evil is that the Deadites COULD easily take out Ash by just retaining human form while he's beating the poo poo out of them in front of horrified onlookers, so that they'd think he was crazy and take him away (or shoot him or something). But that's just not as much FUN as popping out as a Deadite and hearing everybody gasp in horror, then getting to throw down with Ash Meanwhile Baal did try to pull some clever variation on that which was his big mistake, because Ash is too stupid for clever to really work on him

The Deadites always seemed more interested in just creating chaos and with no clear direction. So I never even concerned myself with the idea of them not taking out Ash smarter because they really didn't seem to have a plan at all. That was another big difference with the remake because the demon(s) actually had an actual plan and reason to be killing people. Only the show really introduced that idea to Ash's world. Until Ruby/Baal it all seemed like just evil things loving around. Which is definitely part of what made the Evil Dead franchise unique.

People complain that remakes should try and do something different instead of just rehashing the original but then when remakes actually try and have a different tone or approach then people complain that it's too different and not true to the original.

Well I get it in this case since a good remake/sequel/reboot should stick to the idea/spirit of the franchise even if it finds a new way to approach it and ED 2013 didn't do that at all. It abandoned the chaotic nature of Deadites and whacked out dark humor for a much more straight forward demonic plan plot. It basically took the loose outline of Evil Dead without keeping the tone. Like I said, I think its a good movie on its own but its an arguably poor sequel or whatever part of the franchise its supposed to be. Although, again, I like to look at it as what happens if normal hosed up people encounter Deadites instead of Ash Williams. And Baal and Ruby help make the whole "Wait, they have a plan?" thing fit better.

Yes, I'm behind the wheel. Yes I'm drunk, and maybe my license isn't the fancy kind from the DMV, but at least I'm drunk!" "I will gently caress! YOUR FACES! WITH BULLETS!...Too much?" It's not a quote, but Ash covering the Ash puppet's mouth in the asylum when they are sneaking around deserves mention. Best show on TV.

tbf to the evil dead remake, there are definitely some stuff which are hilarious but played out straight by the actors (the guy who read from the book being almost terminator-like unkillable until it's thematically important for him to die, and the male lead confusedly patting his body gently as he lets it float away in the water), but it does seem to lack some of the manic action of the other evil deads until perhaps the climatic fight at the end

I thought the remake was hilariously nasty. It played it kinda straight on the face but the timing and over the top cruelty was right out of ED2 and I found it to be a delight.

I wonder if the whole "earth-shattering secret"-thing that Brock was about to tell Ash will come up again. I mean, I'd totally understand if it didn't - that whole scene was text-book parody - but it would be interesting if it did.

So I just got the watch that last episode tonight and I cannot put into words my glee as it unfolded. The AoD references, the time travel, the 80's. Ash coping with Pablo's death by getting drunk/high and driving recklessly while loving Cutting Crew plays.

"I know, I'll suck the Evil out! Like a snakebite!" Ash's ideas are so astoundingly, outlandishly bad that they wrap back around into brilliance. Like I imagine that half formed thing was supposed to be another Bad Ash and just was not prepared for the lengths Ash will go to for bad ideas.
