It's a question of whether you value roads more than human life. The main difference between the two is that roads can be repaired.

Constant traffic tie ups with continual road work costs lives, too. It ain't free, either, and they can do better things with the money.

People not driving like maniacs in the snow obviates much of the need for studded tires. Chains, legal or not, are a useful thing to have in the trunk if you're forced to drive in areas of heavy snow. They're fairly easy to get on and off.

AWD is great when you're starting uphill from a standstill on ice or snow. It's also great for getting you into situations you can't get out of that you couldn't have gotten into without AWD.

(It's not a scam if it's done right. You just don't really notice it if you can drive.)

Its basically one of the coldest states in the US and we get a fair amount of snowfall. Luckily its also a pretty flat area so hills are not a huge problem.

I've lived in northern NY (as in Adirondacks) or New England my whole life, and have known maybe half a dozen people who have a separate set of wheels and not just tires.

And if you want to come change my wheels on a snowy street because I live in an apartment with no driveway or garage to park in*, with cars whizzing by you in the dark who can't see you, spraying snow and slush and almost hitting you, be my guest.

Clearly my meaningless anecdotes beat your meaningless anecdotes. :smug:

*Actually I live in a nice house with driveway and garage, but I used to live in a tiny apartment with no parking, like lots of people do.

AWD combined with a manual transmission (i.e. Subaru), and proper tires, is an absolute delight to drive in heavy snow. I routinely play with our Subaru Forester in foot deep, unplowed snows trying to get it to fishtail. It just won't. Period. I have a Chevy Astro AWD that pulls through the snow with no hesitation at all. I usually end up pulling 3 or 4 neighbors up our normally unplowed hill with it every Winter. Now, put both cars on ice, and I don't care how many pulling wheels you have, or how great your tires, you're gonna slide.

"Tiny Trains"

I'm in Canada and I didn't even know winter tires were a thing until recently :)
I drove in the snow for the first time in my life today in my little honda fit with all-season tires. It was fun. If you jam the breaks on you kinda slide in what ever direction you were going and a light comes on on your dash. It took me all of 5 seconds to figure out power = control and to maybe go a bit slower and take corners easier due to the ice on everything.

I saw lots of people going full speed and skidding into other lanes, and people laying on the horn when people weren't accelerating or driving as aggressively as they would in the middle of summer.

As far as I know, winter tires do not just help with snow, but they use a different rubber mixture and tire profile, which means they perform better in colder temperatures, so even if you do not get any snow, they would probably still be a sensible investment if it gets cold at all where people live and drive. It probably doesn't help that many people call them "snow tires" rather than simply winter tires. After all, why would I need snow tires if it never snows?! :byodood:

We call them Winter tires here in Quebec and... well, you saw the video.

Installing/repairing guardrails will often require resetting posts, possibly digging new holes, and other processes that need fairly heavy equipment in often precarious positions. Consequently, it's often not an operation that can be done quickly or cheaply. It has to be planned, evaluated, signed off on by 15 different agencies, and finally budgeted for and scheduled.

In contrast, they can get the extra caution sign up there using two men in a pickup in an afternoon.

Also there's the issue of funding. Anything more than 2 guys in a pickup truck will need allocation of taxpayer funds and we are never ever allowed to increase taxes unless you are from communist poo poo hole like California.

'nother Minnesotan chiming in to say that a decent pair of non-studded winter tires is awesome (though we have competent plow infrastructure, for the most part). Oddly, my friends don't believe in swapping from all-seasons and are apparently incapable of grasping the concept of the material being designed for different temperatures. Makes for funtimes approaching snowy turns at speeds I know I can take without a sweat, but they freak out because all they've ever driven is all-seasons.

My last pair of winter tires aged out last winter, though, and I haven't picked up any new ones. Will see how my new all-seasons fare before I invest in new winters.

(protip to Minnesotans who aren't already aware: get in the MinneapolisMinnesota thread)

AWD is really nice for getting the car moving but does not help as much with turning and stopping. Also, with the wrong tires it's completely useless. I had to move my subaru for snow plows, still had my high performance summer tires on, and it was difficult to go down the block, turn around, and then make it up a slight incline to the driveway. First and last time I drove in snow with those.

AWD or not, you're still braking with the same 4 wheels.

As for studded tires, they really only make a difference on ice. I live in Sweden, and own one car with studded tires and one with non-studded winter tires. There's really no difference except the very rare times when you have serious ice on the road. Most of the time they act the same and I'd argue the non-studded ones perform better on dry roads (which is usually half the time here during winter tire season).

FWIW, we live on a hill in the countryside with little to no snow plowing and even when it's been so bad you couldn't walk without falling over we still made it up. Learning to drive in snow and ice is half the battle.

I probably should have mentioned I live in florida where if I was careful with my night time driving, I could run summer tires year round without issue. :v:
