I'm thinking of getting an NB Miata in the $4-5k range, how important is it to have a Torsen LSD over a different type? As far as I can tell there were a couple different grades of LSD based on the trim, and sometimes no LSD at all, and anything 2003 or later has some Japanese unit instead. I'm not going to be doing any racing, but if Torsens are more reliable or simply perform better I'd like an opinion on the matter.

I'll still probably keep it for another year or two because either way I won't be able to afford another car until after inspection and once that's paid for I may as well keep it. The paint work has started to go since I started owning it so I think I'd have a hard time getting a Japanese buyer interested this side of a respray or some fairly decent rattle can work, which it is now too cold for. I am now a part of club roll bar. Someone local said they would install it for $200 and thinking back that might have been ok. Those back bolts My front left SS brake line ruptured as well. Replaced with a rubber line bc drift event on Sunday and the replacement SS line wouldn't get here in time. After bleeding the brakes they still felt off and it was because the bleeder screws were leaking fluid. I put antisieze on all 4 and that fixed it. The whole time I've had this Miata I knew something was up with the braking system. Lucky the line blew up while I was tinkering around at my house and not on the highway

I'm looking at a 2004 NB tomorrow and want to know where to look up tire reviews. Is Tire Rack the best place for evaluations? The car has stock wheels, Tire Rack says 205/45 16s are what is recommended. I'm in the Florida gulf coast so if anyone has a recommendation for good summer tires that are less than $100 per tire I'd appreciate it. I will be daily driving it, no autocross or anything like that.

It's one of those things where it would be hilariously fun if there were nobody else on the road, and you didn't actually have to be anywhere. Buddy following me said the car wasn't moving in a straight line the whole drive.

Hey guys, after searching for a miata I ended up buying a 2004 MSM and I've only been having problems. I live in CA and the previous seller did not smog it or register it so I had to pay a year of back registration. Also it doesn't run properly, after driving it to a friend's house the battery died from a slow drain and I found that there is a 1amp draw when the car is off, no key in the ignition. I isolated the draw to the ECU I think, as I removed it and the drain disappeared. I was able to get it to run by using jumpers on the EGI relay after pulling a bunch of fuses and checking so i think I blew that part up. While it will run it runs terribly. I thought the ECU might need replacement but a mechanic told me that he'd never seen a bad ECU still allow the car to drive. Anyone experienced anything like this? I have to do work on it at my friend's place because I live in the city and can't work on it, but I fear I might have to take it in to a specialty Miata garage and have them look at it. I can't transfer the title until its smogged so I'm basically SOL until I can get that done. This was a craigslist purchase so I'm proper hosed.

Not saying this is your problem, but we had the ECU on an outboard motor get fried and it ran crappily for 5-10 years until we figured out that it had been spitting out the same telemetry ever since it stopped logging data back when our neighbor's house got struck by lightning.

I know it probably has to do with the rear end repair in which they put on a new quarter panel but it was almost a year ago so I doubt the shop will fix it for free

It's either the tail lights or the rain rail drains being clogged. If your trunk has water in it, there's a nonzero chance that there's also water on some of the interior carpet.

On mine, it was that the flexible plastic rain rail was actually split. Poured water into the trunk and under the parcel shelf.

You bought a used turbo car that wasn't running well...in Cali, where it needs smogged and you can't work on it? Eek. What was your thought process? Does it throw any DTCs? Is the car all stock? If it were me (who has space and tools to work on cars...) I'd make sure no codes are set, boost leak test it to 15-20 psi, test the wastegate to make sure it functions, check plugs/coils, then probably replace the ECU is none of that worked.

I don't intend on being mean but I think you should consider selling the once you get it smogged. The car has been beat on and likely to give you a lot more trouble down the line. Wait....how did you get the title in your name if it didn't pass smog recently?

^ he doesn't have the title per the end of his post FYI: CA DMV states that the seller must smog the vehicle prior to selling. A lot of people on CL don't know/don't care about this, as you found out, but really, if they're not willing to smog the car, that should be a clear sign something's not right. Sorry about your Miata. I hope you can get it in decent running shape. Rotorsport in Santa Clara is a Mazda specialist, also I think there's one in Sunnyvale that a prominent Miata goon works at/owns? Kinda far from the city with a poorly running car, but might be worth it if you can't find anything local AF fucked around with this message at 21:51 on Dec 7, 2016 |
