CSM is where good Goons are sent to die, or at least to become recluses who rarely venture outside illum. When's the last time anyone saw Aryth or Innom in game, or on Jabber? And more to the point, CSM's not useful, because CCP no longer trusts it with private information after the Manny / Gorski Car leak debacles. CSM members often find out about proposed features/changes less than 24 hours before the dev blog goes out, or sometimes not at all. ullerrm fucked around with this message at 04:29 on Dec 8, 2016 |

4th Horseman posted:What was the Gorski Car debacle? He was a guy who served on CSM8, narrowly missed re-election for CSM9, then got onto CSM9 anyways late in the session anyways because they needed an alternate to replace someone. Some logs found on pastebin imply that he was leaking info about upcoming stuff -- namely, a few CCP devs had continued to talk with him on Skype after his CSM8 term about future balance changes and features, and he had leaked those private conversations to other people. (Like, straight up copy-pasting lines from Skype with devs to Skype/IRC.) Because these leaks technically took place while he was between CSM terms, how bad this is depends on your POV. The most generous interpretation is that he merely broke the trust of the devs he talked with. The least generous interpretation is that he broke the NDA. Reality is probably a bit of both. This was around the time that Logibro took over the CSM from Falcon/Leeloo. And shortly after that happened, Manny was outed for breaking the NDA as well, and nearly everyone forgot about it. In any case, as a result of repeated leaks by Gorski, Manny, and others, CCP is way more tight-lipped today about future changes they were with previous CSMs, which vastly reduces the value of the CSM as the canary in the coal mine. I wouldn't be surprised if CCP just retired the CSM as a thing entirely in a few years. ullerrm fucked around with this message at 04:30 on Dec 8, 2016 |

(this could be an edit, but it feels like its own post) FWIW, regardless of its performance over the years, I think CSM is vastly overrated anyways. The entire concept, as far as I can tell, is this: * Players are stupidly invested in Eve, and the things they have built in Eve. * If CCP makes huge fuckups and makes the game lovely, they go out of business, and Eve shuts down, all those internet spaceship pixels disappear. * Thus, players have a vested interest in helping CCP to not gently caress up. * To a certain extent, CCP has a vested interest in not loving up. * CCP is painfully aware that they have a huge history of repeatedly loving up. Hence, the CSM, which got created immediately following a huge CCP fuckup (the T20 incident) as an olive branch to a player base on the verge of rioting. The problems with this: * It's probably not that healthy to get that attached to ephemeral pixels. IMHO, you should value the memories of the fun you had, not the pixels that helped create the fun. * CCP is a famously headstrong company and sometimes just feels like doing poo poo when they feel like it, no matter how many people tell them that it's a bad or abusable idea. (Case in point: the Rorqual rebalance) * At best, CCP gets this weird sense of obligation to iterate upon Eve and keep those digital assets going, instead of moving on to new shiny things. TBH, gently caress getting that attached to a bunch of internet spaceship pixels, or a single company. Why the hell not just vote with your dollar? If CCP starts loving up and the game stops being fun, stop subbing. Worst case, they go out of business. Best case, they fix it, or make a new game that doesn't have the problem. (Worked for Blizzard -- WoW stopped being fun when they hosed up during Cata/Mists/Warlords, people left. Blizzard made it slightly more fun again with Legion, people came back.) And on a longer run, I think it's better for CCP as a company if they gently caress up repeatedly and learn from their lessons, instead of constantly asking their player base how to be as careful and milquetoast as possible. ullerrm fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Dec 8, 2016 |

Picking some guys who are really good at pvp and flying ships to design the game is like having a really good driver to in charge of putting together a new car. quote:* At best, CCP gets this weird sense of obligation to iterate upon Eve and keep those digital assets going, instead of moving on to new shiny things. If you'd call valkyrie or dust "iterating on eve" then, well, I can't really agree. They have some shared assets and a brand, and that brand has a fair amount of recognition. They'd be stupid not to use it for a scifi type game.

Let's be very respectful to those who have passed away. Secondly thank you SO much Jbz! I now have a rorqual! Jbz called it "The Spirit of SA" which is just the best and most perfect name. I will be able to fly the beauty on the 27th of January. (Had to buy a few more skill books and set them off!) I am ecstatic and never thought I'd get to Rorqual stage so fast! Next march I will have been playing for about a year, which is nuts!

A reminder for VideoGames -- if you do intend to come to Delve in a rorqual, make sure to join a corporation in Goonswarm Federation. Otherwise, you might be shot! GSF operates on a "Not Blue, Shoot It" (NBSI) approach to hostiles; if you don't have blue (friendly) standings, you will be hunted and killed. That would be a shame! Also, if you need help moving a capital ship, let us know. It's generally best to use their capital jump drives to travel safely, rather than taking such a slow, cumbersome ship through stargates without backup.

How can a company learn from experience when they've got a built-in revolving door for underqualified, underpaid, inexperienced staff? The people who seem to be able to take the longview at CCP seem to be those who keep this game running almost as a labor of love. Unfortunately when that's the case, you run the risk of people being over committed to their own personal ideas on how things should be - that effect needs to be balanced out, if not outright avoided. Since CCP doesn't seem like they're ever going to stop hiring players, something like the CSM will probably always have to exist (even if it's just community managers who actually have the power to slap Fozzie or w/e). Although you're right and the CSM, pretty much since birth it seems, has been little more than an ineffectual yet colossal waste of both time and money.

It's a career stepping stone. It's easy to get hired at CCP because no one wants to work there. Then after a few years of experience as a game dev your resume is good enough for a company that isn't (e.g. Riot)
