Ade being whitewashed got most of the attention last season, and it was sort of brushed off with "well, she's not exactly around for long anyway," but they did the same with Errinwright. I didn't recall this until I went through the books again, but he's a dark-skinned South Asian in the books, and he's white-rear end Shawn Doyle in the show. Harder to brush him off as a bit character.

Hell, even Naomi. Alex is drastically different in both race and age, but it works very well. Amos is perfectly cast. Edit: This thread shouldn't give a poo poo about this sort of thing. For you folks, I just rewatched season 1 and it's: still fun.

There's so much forced interpersonal drama and drama in general in the show that I just don't like. At least in the two episodes I watched. Like, when the Cant goes up, in the book there are shared commiserations and they get drunk while waiting days for pickup. In the show it's recriminations to the point of pulling guns on each other, a space walk, and suffocation. What none of it did was make me like these people any more, instead I thought they were idiots. I'm still mostly enjoying it but I'm generally not a fan of all angst, all the time writing. I'll keep trucking on.

They've done a good job tightening up the show. The books have a major tendency to dip into "That makes no goddamn sense" territory way to often. Plus the show makes Jim tolerable when in the books he's an rear end in a top hat who makes everything he touches worse, and accuses others of being horrible people for doing things exponentially less horrible then he's done. I like the story and setting, but the author has a gift for making characters that feel like they're the mirror opposite of what his intentions were. Though even at the end of season one they're not at book levels of closeness, but you can clearly see that they're getting there.

The Donkey Balls episode is both the funniest episode and the one with the most interpersonal crew strife -- Holden nearly shoots Amos, and you learn everything you need to know about all four Roci crewmembers. After a second watch of the season in a marathon viewing, I feel like the entire emotional arc of the first season hinges on that episode, and also puts all four of them into focus as more believable characters. (As an aside, the finale episode is pretty lovely, although it does pay off the Holden/violence theme that Donkey Balls sets up and is thoroughly explored in the books.) Syfy made a bunch of short and corny behind-the-scenes vignettes that pair with digital copies of the show, and for this episode the producers talk about how they let the Corey boys be more involved in the show's production than most adaptations like this, and said it was clearly a good idea to bring them in. That analogy is flawed but I agree with you in spirit -- Donkey Balls is Corey being forced to streamline character development into one single episode and it resonates wonderfully throughout the rest of the show. I can't say I'm surprised about how effectively they pivoted into adapting for another medium. They love doing vignettes in the novels, either as deliberate asides or sprinkled inside POI chapters as third-person monologues. That sort of micro-detail-revealing-macro-motivation is the bread and butter of good television.

I think the added tension among the Roci crew was a good move. It doesn't really change who they are so much as it gives them a more interesting starting point, if that makes sense. On the other hand, I'm not so into some of the changes to Miller. The big one for me has to do with the landlord who hasn't been changing his air filters. In the show, Miller's been accepting bribes to look the other way, presumably for some time, before eventually having a change of heart and threatening the guy. It's based on this bit from the book: Leviathan Wakes posted:"You grew up where the water's maybe dirty, but it falls out of the sky for you," Miller said. "The air's filthy, but it's not going away if your door seals fail. It's not like that out here." The two versions say pretty different things about who Miller is and who Belters are in general, and I don't really feel like the show's version was an improvement.

So I've binged on this twice, and since then devoured the first and second novel. I have to say I like the changes the show made, I agree with the above sentiment that it feels like a directors cut - although it's more like the book is an early draft and the show has been reworked. The cold war and tensions between Earth and Mars flesh out the universe more as much as they allow for the earlier introduction of Chrisjen, and the Characters feel far more fleshed out - Dawes, for example, was a highlight in the show for me, while in the books he is barely a blip. A lot of credit needs to be given to the actors. Honestly, I think it was an inept way of showing his redemptive arc kicked off by his Quixotic quest to save Julie Mao. He wanted to be a better person than he actually was and was trying to put his life on the correct path. But it came across as clumsy and could have been addressed better with him not being the cop getting bribe in that case. By all means show the corruption and how low he has sunk, but instead have him excecute Belter justice on the property manger *and* whatever random cop was facilitating the manager. And have the cop be all surprised with "What the hell? You're just as dirty as the rest of us. Where do you get off?" Miller: "I get off right here" *punches airlock button* *smirks at camera*

The show in general feels a little less lush and dense as a universe, you don't get the same sense of scale. However, the show is as fun as the books are at their best and I'll take that any day. If you want more, the books are there and they are good.

I don't think it will. When it was first released I think it must have had the most silent release of any (relatively) big production series ever. I had not even heard of it until it had already completely aired. However as more people watched it, people started talking about it and by now even Netflix picked it up where it got a decent amount of exposure. With the new season starting to air next month I believe a whole lot of people will start live watching it.

I found out about this show because of some random post on Reddit or facebook or something saying that the first few episodes were streaming for free on Syfy. Other than that, nothing. People are going pretty nuts about it, so it should probably survive season 2.

I dunno why but I'm really hyped for this next season. I WANT it to be good as it is the only show right now which scratches that good SyFy itch and has a likeable cast too. So I was reading the newest book, when at one point they’re naming off some Martian ships and one of them is called the Mark Watney. I know it’s just a shoutout, but I guess The Expanse officially takes place in the same universe as The Martian? I could 100% see Watney being held up as a Martian folk hero in the Expanse.
