It seems to have been modified for a very specific reason, but I can't figure out what that reason is. Those look like deep fryer baskets packed into the back.

The actual "bed" wasn't very large, it looks like there would be a lot of space left on either side of it. I think those boxes are to allow more storage in that otherwise wasted space.

If that was a hatchback, there would be a recess where those side bins are that are now covered up by the sides of the bed, so that would be an interesting storage solution. I can't hate it. Even though it's not the most professional looking thing, someone got rear-ended and said, "Aw dammit, now I gotta turn it into a Ranchero," and actually did a half-decent job and hooked up a proper set of lights and added side pockets, whereas I would cry and call USAA.

Terrible car stuff: Holden just unveiled their new Commodore: http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news/2018-holden-commodore-revealed-47908 Even the current one is erring on being too 'euro' in styling. The biggest changes to the classic Aussie Commodore: No more V8 option, no RWD and no manual transmission.

They get them pretty much at cost. Even ignoring typical laughable GM panel gap, you can tell that thing has been hit real hard just by looking at the doors on the drivers side. I'd guess it was hit hard on the drivers side rear, between the pics and video, since the only visible body filler seems to be on the drivers side, and the video from the passenger side seems to show the doors and panels lining up properly. Nothing on the drivers side lines up, even the rear wheel looks like it's a bit off. It's pre-facelift, so model year should be 2011-2013. fake edit: just looked at GM's website, for 2016 and above there's L, LS, 1LT, 2LT, hybrid, and premier. I'm guessing the L is now the former LS, the LS is a mix of L and 1LT features, etc. The L is the only one with hubcaps, the rest have alloys. e2: LS adds backup camera, streaming music, and alloys. So yeah... pretty much what a 1LT was on the prior generation.

So you're assuming they bought all the parts with that outcome in mind, instead of looking around the yard and realizing they had a rusty old window AC and some OSB and a generator for when the power company cuts them off

The Falcon and Commodore eventually ended up very similar but they came from a completely different starting place.

It's funny, the Falcon (as I understand) was supposed to be a small-ish economy car in the US in the 60s, when compared to things like Galaxies and Bel-Airs, but we took it and made it loving massive in the 70s and into the 80s and used it for all sorts of luxury and performance things. If we want to talk about dumb loving things the car industry has done in this country, the two dumbest spring to mind: Holden deciding that they needed a "world car" and then deciding the Camira () was it, and then Toyota deciding in the late 90s that Australians didn't want powerful 6-cylinder rear wheel drive cars and that the Avalon was the future. Toyota even went so far as to take out a memorial notice in newspapers heralding "The death of rear wheel drive". Idiots.

# ? Dec 11, 2016 01:58 |

That's mainly because Toyota didn't have a RWD (and hadn't since the Camry took over from the Cressida). I never saw the point of the Avalon in the AU/NZ market though - just because you have tooling left over from an old model doesn't mean it's a good idea to take it to the other side of the world and set up an assembly line. Funnily enough my father worked for GMH (in New Zealand) though the 80s and had a string of Camiras as company cars. One of them was a Japanese built (NZ market only) JJ which turned out to be a decent car but the locally assembled ones were all pretty drat awful. Tellingly he's never had another GM product although my grandfather who was also a GM employee has suffered through a string of Vectras and Astras for some misguided loyalty related reason. e. For you non Australians the Camira was the downunder version of the J platform (i.e. Cavalier) just with a tiny engine. dissss fucked around with this message at 02:21 on Dec 11, 2016 |

I learned to drive on a Camira manual that had a crack in the firewall where the clutch pedal bolted up to it. The friction point was like a choose-your-own-adventure. Upside is I can basically drive anything now no matter how bad the clutch is.

Oh and for the love of all that is holy - make sure you actually get the spare wheel. If you are anywhere near the NSW/QLD border and buying from a dealership - just take a peak under the tray. I know of a person (now in jail) that decided that sneaking into dealership lots at night and stealing the alloy spares and selling them off on ebay/facebook was a brilliant idea.
