Awhile back I asked a lot of you guys to fill out a video game survey about the Best Games of All Time, Best Game Music of All Time, etc etc. We're recording the show where we present that stuff tonight and you can come watch live on Twitch if you want (or watch the polished and nice looking version on Youtube in a week in a half). <3

Poison Mushroom posted:I actually don't mind answering this! CCNA,Cisco certified networking associate. It should be a good base for starting an IT career. I don't work in the IT field, though I believe by there are many in this thread that do or have experience with getting hired in the field. I know many people who have great jobs in the IT field. It's booming right now haha. That book should be in the mail this Monday, so probably end of next week you'll get it

A CCNA is far above what you should look at for starting an IT career and will be hard af to work through as your first exam but good luck if you do it

I would highly suggest getting any of the MTA certs over a CCNA to begin with since a CCNA is much more specialized. For example if you care anything about databases, the MTA 98-364 is where you should start. If you're into service desk/help desk type stuff, get your A+. The CCNA is by no means useless but it's rather niche compared to some of the other certs.

Both because they seem like tests that I'm reasonably close to already understanding the material on, and because they look fairly general-purpose, in regards to being 'the IT guy'.

What am I looking for, both in certification, and in job titles/where to find this kind of work. (And what kind of wage/salary to expect.) Also, where and how to best study for whichever I take? I'll send you a prep book that I already have, CCNA, and another one, of your choice. Just lemme know

Not a final decision yet, but I'm thinking I'll take the 367 and the CCNA, try to look fairly generalist. Security & networking.

What am I looking for, both in certification, and in job titles/where to find this kind of work. (And what kind of wage/salary to expect.) Also, where and how to best study for whichever I take? That sounds like your typical level 1 help desk. Those are going to require you to have your A+, so that would absolutely be where I'd start. The two you mentioned are definitely not bad supplements to have in addition, but you will 100% need the A+. Some employers will allow you to take the test within X number of days of being hired if you can shmooze your way through an interview, but having it already will definitely help. Other certs that are helpful are any of the recent MS Operating System certs, particularly Server ones if you're going to be doing network administration, or just the "specialist" certs for whatever flavor of Windows you like from here: Windows Certs. Note that not every business in the world is going to be on Windows 10 yet - ours is personally still in Win 7 because of certain dependencies that don't allow us to upgrade easily, and I imagine many are in that same boat. There are still PCs here that run Windows XP, crazy as that may seem. It would be best to get familiar with some ticketing systems if you aren't already - JIRA is the one we use and is pretty standard in the industry. Track-It is another. Some places use what is called a "Kanban" style system instead of a direct ticketing system - JIRA supports this natively. There's also free Kanban software out there, though I'm not familiar at all with any of them other than Trello. In terms of where and how to best study - that's really up to the individual. I've always found, personally, that trying to read in groups never worked for me, and that studying on my own and then attempting to teach the material to someone else was the best way to reinforce it in my own head. That will of course be difficult if you don't know anyone else studying the same thing. I would just pick up an exam prep book and go to town. You can probably find copies cheap used on ebay. If you're interested in database stuff, I have a pdf copy of the 70-461 SQL Exam lying around somewhere I'm sure I could get to you somehow, but you would definitely want to pass the related MTA first if you're interested at all in that route. Let me know if you have any other questions

Your A+ is always a solid entry-level cert, I suggest All-In-One CompTIA A+ Certification by Mike Meyers for studying.

Also also: if you have any interest in programming at all, I highly HIGHLY suggest learning Powershell, especially for someone looking to go into Help Desk/IT Support. Not only is it immensely useful for automating mundane tasks, it's super awesome for anything Windows and/or network related in general. It's also pretty easy to learn - I wrote my first powershell script in a few hours just googling around and experimenting.

What kind of salary/wages should I be looking for?) 5. Get jorb 6. ????????
